Newly signed Pele van Anholt settling in for the Galaxy’s defense

At home on the Galaxy back line is where you can find Pele Van Anholt . The Dutch defender finally made his Galaxy debut in last week’s scoreless draw against the Seattle Sounders. Van Anholt was signed July 12 after time with Willem II in the Eredivisie. “It was a beautiful moment,” van Anholt said. “The big stadium, a lot of people in the stadium ….the (scoreless) draw can be better. I think we had a lot of chances and we have to score one of those chances.” Communication is a key for the back four and the goalkeeper and that’s been somewhat of a problem this season with the Galaxy (6-10-5, 23 points) having to utilize so many different faces in both positions. “Maybe a little different tactical stuff I have to learn,” he said. “I think in a few weeks, I will know everything.” The time between his arrival and debut was welcomed as it helped van Anholt get settled to his new surroundings. He’s still living in a hotel, but is scheduled to move in an apartment shortly. One big adjus...

Sunday Editorial: A deeper harbor, a stronger Jacksonville | Jacksonville News, Sports and Entertainment

If Jacksonville’s port is to remain competitive, it must not turn away from all the opportunities before it. That means deepening the port, as has been done for over 100 years. Ships are getting bigger. With federal and state help, Jacksonville is on the way to funding a necessary port deepening plan . The critics are widespread. But the history of progress in this country is replete with naysayers Like the skeptics who called the Dames Point Bridge a “bridge to nowhere.” Or the “black hats” who 50 years ago sought to retain the status quo and keep intact a corrupt city government and an underperforming county government . The voices of the business community and those who are involved in the port need to be heeded. They know the value of a deeper channel. Jacksonville’s port is a lifeline for this economy. We must go forward. This is no time to take a backward step. ECONOMIC BENEFITS The economic impact has been questioned by several experts, but we are more impressed by facts prov...

Crunching numbers on Hattiesburg's budget

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - January's tornado, poor documentation and other issues are causing city officials to crunch numbers, quickly, to close 2017's budget before moving forward. Interim Chief Financial Officer Connie Everett said her assessment of Hattiesburg's finances indicates that FY 2017 has been a difficult year . "I am concerned, obviously," Everett said.  "I don't think it's exactly critical, but it does bear close watching ." Everett said the January tornado set the city back by over $4 million and the recovery is not yet complete.  With insurance and FEMA reimbursements, the city has received about $2.4 million to date. "It's not something that happens right away," said Everett. Everett said there are still three majors structures in Hattiesburg that need to be rebuilt, with other locations needing upgrades and improvements.  Everett said she believes those reimbursements will continue, but the city may not see the...

Malone Telegram | Indian Trails Apartments eyed by out-of-state management company

Image
ARTICLE OPTIONS MALONE — One of the largest apartment management companies in the country is pursuing the purchase of the Indian Trails Apartments , contingent on the receipt of a federal grant and the extension of a payment in lieu of taxes agreement. WinnCompanies of Boston has asked the Town Council to submit a letter in support of its grant application, Supervisor Howard F. Maneely said Monday. The grant would pay for a “complete remodeling of all the buildings” in the 128- unit apartment complex , Mr. Maneely said. The board is scheduled to meet this morning to vote on the letter. The company, which bills itself as the largest manager of low-income housing in the nation, also is seeking an extension of the payment in lieu of taxes agreement the current owner — Eastview Associates of New York City — has with the various taxing entities, Mr. Maneely said. That agreement requires the owner to pay the full cost of fire protection and water and sewer service, but only 10 percent of ...

Beekeeping interest grows in southern Illinois, St Louis MO

Image
The number of bee colonies and beekeepers in Illinois is on the rise, yet the bees are in decline. And getting started as a beekeeper would cost about $300. Or maybe it’s a lot more. Like many other bee-related questions, the answer depends on whom you ask. “If you ask 10 people you get 10 different answers, there’s no hard and fast answers,” laughs Scott Wesemann , 54. Wesemann and his brother, Mark Wesemann, have been keeping bees at Scott’s Collinsville home since about April. They are helping increase the ranks of beekeepers in Madison, St. Clair and Monroe counties, which was at 349 in 2016, up from 171 in 2012. The Wesemann brothers spent about $700 on the hive boxes, bees, beekeeper suits , smokers and the like. While they hope to get some honey by next year — “honey next year, or — I love ’em, but otherwise I’m out,” says Mark — other beekeepers just like the insects. Scott plans to keep the hives regardless of the honey output; he enjoys watching them. One time I didn’t have ...

Apartment burned badly by roof fire | Local

The roof of an apartment complex in Rapid City partially collapsed after it caught fire Saturday evening , forcing dozens of people to evacuate and seek lodging. Oliver White, public information officer for the Rapid City Fire Department , said the call for the fire came in at about 7 p.m. after the rooftop of one of the Stoney Creek Highlands Apartments  was ablaze. At least one resident was transported to the hospital in an ambulance. None of the firefighters were injured.  He said it was too early to officially confirm the cause of the fire, but many of the apartment's residents, and people who live in other buildings, said the fire started when a lightning bolt struck the roof. "I just heard a big boom and then a lot of sirens," said Steve Otto, who lives a few apartments away.  Erica Lafferty, who lives on the first floor of the complex with her husband and daughter, said she heard a loud boom and could feel the apartment shake. She didn't think anything of it...

In south Palo Alto, a battle is brewing | News

Just outside of Sharlene Carlson's secluded condominium patio , redwood trees tower overhead and filtered sunlight dapples the cool dirt floor below. "I love living here," said Carlson of the Palo Alto Redwoods , a 117-unit complex in south Palo Alto built on the site of a former redwood-tree nursery. "I thought I was going to buy and then move up, but I'm in a serene place. It's almost a spiritual place. I look at the redwood trees and feel peaceful and calm." But that calm has recently been disrupted as plans have emerged to develop the property next to Palo Alto Redwoods : 4256 El Camino Real , the current site of Su Hong, a Chinese restaurant. The proposal to build a 69-room hotel and eight townhomes has galvanized to action not only Carlson, head of the homeowners association, but other Palo Alto Redwoods residents as well. Seven condo owners voiced their concerns at Thursday's meeting of the city's Architectural Review Board , wh...

Atlanta company buys Deerwood Village apartments for $34 million - News - Ocala.com

Tenants can expect renovations — as well as increased rents. By Richard AnguianoBusiness editor An Atlanta real estate investment and management company has bought Deerwood Village apartments for $34.15 million and tenants can expect renovations — as well as increased rents. Cortland Partners had been interested in the complex because of the company’s “regional footprint” with properties in Jacksonville, Gainesville, Orlando and Clermont, according to John Builder III , the company’s director of investments in Florida. “The ‘big-house’ design is a market differentiator that Cortland was interested in and after completing due diligence in Ocala, we discovered a lot to like about the market as a whole,” Builder wrote in an e-mail, adding that company officials were sold on the area’s “ great job drivers ” and low cost of living. Deerwood Villages is a 328- unit complex built in 2006 on 40 acres at 1850 SE 18th Ave . and features garden-style, or what the company calls “...

Ohio officer seen striking man on video suspended 15 days

Published: Wednesday, August 23, 2017 @ 12:56 PM Updated: Wednesday, August 23, 2017 @ 12:55 PM Euclid — A suburban Cleveland police department has suspended a white officer without pay for 15 days after he was seen in a cellphone video repeatedly punching and hitting a black man's head on pavement after a traffic stop for a suspended driver's license. Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer announced the suspension at a City Council meeting Monday , saying it was the maximum number of days he could give officer Michael Amiott under departmental rules. Meyer said he would recommend that the city's mayor impose an additional unpaid suspension for the Aug. 12 incident. The cellphone video viewed more than 7 million times on Facebook has sparked outrage across the country. A police dashcam video shows Amiott wrestling 25 -year-old Richard Hubbard III to the ground within seconds of ordering him to "face away" after Hubbard steps out of the car. Illegal Apartments Can Go Unnoticed, DC Officials Say After 2 Deaths

Image
What to Know Nina Brekelmans, 25, and Michael McLoughlin, 24, died one year ago after a fire broke out near Dupont Circle, on Riggs Place NW. D.C. officials found that the house where they rented rooms had not been inspected and was not licensed for rental. Cities across the country grapple with how to detect illegal apartments, experts say. The fire that sent flames shooting through the roof of a three-story rowhouse near Dupont Circle started on the first floor, investigators found . An electrical short sparked in the landlord’s living room, and the blaze raced upward in the historic house. Four people were inside. Nina Brekelmans awoke in the burning building and called 911, according to a lawsuit filed by her family. Firefighters arrived minutes later, but by the time they were able to reach her and her housemate Michael McLoughlin , it was too late. Brekelmans, 25, and McLoughlin, 24, were killed by the blaze June 3, 2015 at 1610 Riggs Place NW , where they each rented rooms....
