Man Spends 30 Years Turning His Apartment Into A Palace

Image
Adrian Reeman is a DIY guru! He has spent the last 30 years turning his Southhampton council flat into a replica of the Palace of Versailles. Over time he has transformed the walls, ceiling, fireplace, and cupboards in every room. His ninth floor apartment now has a palatial feel with an interior fit for a king. Despite devoting hundreds of hours to working his magic on wardrobes, chairs, chests, and tables, Adrian has spent very little money, because he finds or makes everything himself! Some of the tables, for example, are made from discarded wooden salad bowls , while the detailing on the fireplace was created using the brass prongs from plugs. Adrian is currently creating a toilet with a faux marble finish to serve as the perfect throne. What’s even more incredible is that Adrian has no professional design experience , nor has he ever visited Versailles! To say he figured this out on his own is the understatement of the year. Sadly, I am not a DIY person. I love the idea of mak...

Stuyvesant Town goes green: How the 70-year-old complex is reinventing itself in a modern age

Though the 80- acre residential complex ’s 110 red brick, cruciform-shaped buildings were constructed 70 years ago this month, their imposing facades are hiding an intense network of systems that, since 2011, have allowed the development to reduce its on- site carbon emissions by 6.8 percent, equal to over 17 million pounds of coal saved. To put this in perspective, that’s roughly the same savings as 3,000 drivers deciding to bike or take the train for an entire year or planting a forest of 400,000 trees. This massive sustainability push , along with new ownership (Blackstone Group and Canadian investment firm Ivanhoe Cambridge bought the complex for $5.3 billion in October 2015), updated amenities, and an affordable housing commitment , is driving Manhattan’s  largest apartment complex  into t...

Eclipse eve: Millions converge across US to see sun go dark - KPTV

Millions of Americans converged on a narrow corridor stretching from Oregon to South Carolina to watch the moon blot out the midday sun Monday for a wondrous couple of minutes in the first total solar eclipse to sweep coast to coast in 99 years. Veteran eclipse watchers warned the uninitiated to get ready to be blown away. Planetariums and museums posted "Sold out of eclipse glasses " on their front doors. Signs along highways reminded motorists of " Solar Eclipse Monday ," while cars bore the message "Eclipse or bust." With 200 million people within a day's drive of the path of totality, towns and parks braced for monumental crowds. It's expected to be the most observed, most studied and most photographed eclipse ever. Not to mention the most festive, what with all the parties. In Salem, Oregon, a field outside the state fairgrounds was transformed into a campground in advance of an eclipse-watching party for 8,500. "It's one of tho...

Look inside the new £7.8m student block which has everything...except a bar

Construction has finished at Plymouth’s new £7. 8million Mary Parker House student block , which comes with a laundry, gym and bike store – but no bar. That’s because students are apparently shunning alcohol in favour of a healthier lifestyle. “We are not encouraging excessive use of alcohol,” said Samantha Keveren, accommodation manager at the block. “We’re offering the alternative of a healthy lifestyle. “I worked at the University of Exeter and their alcohol-free flats were very popular. “Yes, there is still freshers’ week, but there are students choosing to be alcohol free.” 24/08/2017 Pic by: Penny Cross Business Look inside the new Mary Parker House student flats block , on land next door to the former Eye Infirmary Dale Road .
