Mary Gomez, property manager, said at the start of each rental year, she spends time teaching some residents the basics, such as how to run a garbage disposal, use a gas stove and hook up a phone. "We have to get them on the bus," Gomez said. "You're like a mother hen." The Saxony also loans out vacuum cleaners, mops, hair dryers and irons and will provide other cleaning supplies. "I try to make them feel very welcome and let them know we appreciate that they came," she said. …

An early morning fire on Dec. 26 forced residents from Saxony Apartments, 305 N. Frances St. The Madison Fire Department rescued four residents from upper floors, and no injuries were sustained. A resident reported the fire, which mostly affected the lobby area, at 4:20 a.m. No cause has been established, but sources suspect the fire may have been set intentionally. After a brief eviction, residents were allowed to return to their apartments to gather their belongings before the building was closed until Jan. 18. “All the students moved out and we are moving them back in on the 18th. They did get one month’s free rent for their inconvenience,” Mary Gomaz, Saxony manager said. “We have worked very hard to get them back in time for school.” The building houses mainly international UW- Madison students — most of which were away for the semester break. Located along Ninth Street in the city's downtown, [1] this five- story brick building includes a distinctive range of architectural details. Among these elements are brick pilasters and projections, a three- story bay window on each side of the symmetrical main facade , semicircular balconies , and many stone pieces, such as pediments, keystones, and stringcourses. Due to its location at the intersection of Ninth and Race Streets, the Saxony appears to have two fronts: one onto each street.
