A Week of Mining Seattle's Craigslist Apartment Pricing

Image
Everyone is freaking out over San Francisco astronomically high rent prices right now when Seattle real-estate isn’t that far behind. I was walking down the street once in the university district around the University of Washington when I saw construction being built. And then more construction. And then MORE construction down the block. Ridiculous. Looking at a half-torn up flyer, the prices for these new apartments coming out in 2015 were around 1300 per bedroom for a two bedroom apartment ! I quickly went home and started trying to figure out how fast rent was rising in Seattle. One fun way to do this was by working on a project that I have since put off for school back in November. Since reliably the best place to find apartments has been on Craigslist, I created a script using Scrapy to grab listings of apartments on Seattle craigslist and filtered them for the zipcodes within the Seattle boundaries . I manually ran the script for about a week and after filtering out duplicate p...

Lovely Collects Apartment Listings, Organizes Them, Drops Them On a Google Map

Image
The next time you're looking for an apartment or rental home, give Lovely a shot. The service pulls in apartment listings from all over the web ( including Craigslist , which Padmapper, our current favorite , no longer supports, no thanks to Craigslist) and organizes them so you can easily see how many rentals are in a given neighborhood or city, search for specific amenities or prices, and then get in touch with the landlord. Lovely works a lot like some of the other Google- maps based services that do the same thing, but where Lovely shines is in how well designed the whole service is. Before you zoom in on a map, you can see how many listings are in an area with a simple number, so you don't have to count push-pins, and neighborhoods are broken up into zones so you can see whether a rental falls in the area you want to live. You can see the age of a given apartment listing and how fresh it is right from the map view, so you don't waste time looking at old listings. Of...

For $750, Seattle’s newest apartment is the size of a parking space

At $750 a month, a new apartment opening in the University District is one of the cheapest in Seattle. So what do you get for that price? A room the size of a parking space with a toilet that’s not even behind its own door. The landlord for a congregate housing building opening on Seventh Avenue Northeast recently posted an ad online searching for tenants, and it was widely circulated this week in a Reddit post that referred to the room as a “prison cell.” The ad features a 130-square-foot “studio” that contains a sink, shower and toilet. The entire space is in one room: The toilet and shower are open to the rest of the living space. There is no kitchen. The rent is $750 a month, plus a $1,000 deposit, and includes access to a congregate kitchen area and free utilities. “This is a definite MUST SEE!!” the ad says. New apartment in U District! $750/month !?!? For perspective, just seven years ago, $750 got renters the average University District studio , according to Dupre + Scot...

‘Boom-mates’ find a niche amid Bellingham housing crisis

Image
As housing prices in Western Washington continue through the roof, some Bellingham millennials have saved money by becoming “boom-mates” with empty-nest couples with space to rent. Baby boomers have been taking the blame recently for many of society’s ills, but research by the real estate firm Trulia could put this “worst generation” at the cutting edge of a way to ease the housing crunch in Whatcom County. My current landlord is very responsive to things like maintenance requests. Stephanie Allen, Bellingham “I used to do this for a few years,” said Michael Godwin of Bellingham in response to a social media inquiry . “I rented a mother-in-law suite from an older couple whose kids were old enough to be out of the house.” Godwin said he paid about $550 a month including utilities for a room in the Geneva- Sudden Valley area from 2013-2016. “I feel like it saved me money insofar as it was the cheapest way for me to live by myself,” Godwin said. “Had I opted for an apartment with room...

Few rooms remain vacant; Hotels, RV spaces mostly full ahead of eclipse

Image
If you’re calling accommodations providers in La Grande trying to make a reservation for this weekend, you may be pleasantly surprised to find a few options available. Few is the operative word, however. Crowds of visitors traveling to the region are projected to be hundreds of thousands. Eastern Oregon University , which is renting out campus dorms during the eclipse weekend, has reported that only five to eight suites of the original 60 are still available. Each suite contains two or three rooms. “We do have a handful still open, but we’re still trying to catch up,” said EOU Director of Residence Life Jeremy Jones . “We don’t do this very often.” Jones said EOU uses the dorms for conferences and teams during the summer, but nothing like this. Jones is confident the EOU rooms will be full by Friday. He estimated that nearly 200 people will stay in the dorms for three nights. “We hope we’re adding value to the community and help get people here to utilize the restaurants,” Jones said....

Redbeard carries a backpack and a sacred calling

Image
I once saw Redbeard riding his skateboard along Otay Lakes Road . It was close to midnight, there were only a few cars on the road, and the light from the streetlamps was dim. As he snaked his way down the slope, hands in his pocket, moving toward the Sweetwater Valley —where he sleeps against the wall of the Circle K, or holds his signs along the 805 exit for spare change or spreads the good news to the people of the jungle — I thought of a verse he once shared with me, a Psalm of promises from God: For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot. When I first met Redbeard he was sitting still on a patch of grass, legs outstretched, under the shade of a large clump of bamboo-like Arundo donax , alongside a drainage ditch next to the southbound 805 freeway exit onto Bonita Roa...

If you’ve never lived in poverty, stop telling poor people what they should do

The brownstone I lived in for eight months in 2009 and 2010 had few amenities – the building often smelled like leaking pipes, the carpets were threadbare in many places, and the steam heater in the corner was completely out of my control, resulting in quite a few freezing mornings and sweltering nights. It did, however, have a gas stove and oven which, the landlord had told me, was pretty new and “worked great.” Unfortunately, everything else in the unit was electric, which meant that I’d need to set up separate utility accounts and pay for the gas every month just to run the stove and range. “It’s like $10 to turn it on and then another $20-$30 per month depending on how much you use it,” she explained. Yeah, I’m just not going to do that, then,  I thought, doing the math in my head. At that point, $30 was just a little bit less than my tak...
