A skyscraper that would be the tallest residential building in California has been proposed for downtown Los Angeles as the neighborhood’s housing boom rolls on. Crescent Heights , a Miami-based developer, submitted a proposal to the city Planning Department this week to build a 70- story apartment building that would stand out in size and design amid the rapidly growing South Park district east of Staples Center,  the Los Angeles Times reported Friday . The 810-foot building with 794 units would be the third-tallest in Los Angeles behind the recently opened Wilshire Grand hotel and office tower and the U.S. Bank Tower office building completed in 1989. Last year, Crescent Heights completed Ten Thousand , a 40- story luxury apartment complex on Santa Monica Boulevard on the edge of Century City. It also plans to build two residential high-rises next to the Hollywood Palladium on Sunset Boulevard, The Times reported . Its lates...

Image
click to enlarge PHOTO BY CAITLIN LEE The Everly's amenities include a fourth-floor pool and a Jumbotron. Tuesday was move-in day at Everly on the Loop — the pricey new high-rise on Delmar targeting students at Washington University and other nearby colleges . Complementary sushi from United Provisions and Insomnia cookies were just the start of amenities that greeted new residents. Around 250 people were moving into their furnished apartments. Seventy-five more will join them next Monday, just a week before for classes start at Wash U. That’s enough to fill about three-fourths of the building’s 428 bedrooms, says Brant Pustay, a leasing and marketing specialist with Landmark Properties, which is managing the project on behalf of the Koman Group. Management teams have hosted a variety of promotions over the recent months. Some marketed free food celebrating graduates at Chris Sommers’ nearby restaurants Pi and Zza, while others offered new le...

With crime down, Barrington Place Apartments has become 'a good place to live' - News - The Fayetteville Observer

By Nichole Manna Staff writer A Fayetteville apartment complex that was almost closed by the city can now be used as an example for other establishments facing city -forced closures, officials say. A year ago, residents at Barrington Place Apartments , known then as Cambridge Arms Apartments , were used to the sounds of screaming voices during neighborhood fights, followed by gunshots. "Two or three times a night you'd hear gunshots," longtime resident George Edmonds said. "There were meth labs, stabbings, people were getting robbed, you'd have people trying to get in your apartment." From June 2013 to May 2014, Fayetteville police say they were called to the complex 142 times. The majority of calls were for domestic assaults and residential break-ins. Two people were killed during that timeframe. From June 2014 to May 2015, police were called to the complex 77 times, a decrease of 46 percent. Break-ins are down 65 percent and domestic assaults down 44...

‘My Kids Are by Themselves’

An East Hampton woman is facing felony charges of aggravated drunken driving , as well two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, following her arrest last week. According to the East Hampton Village police , Amber Elizabeth Gregg , 27, left her two children, a 4-year-old and a 7-month-old baby, alone in her apartment while she was out drinking on the morning of Aug. 16. She was almost home at 4 a.m. when she was arrested, at the wheel of a 2001 Hyundai, in the parking lot off Newtown Lane, just before the North Main Street intersection . She had turned into the lot, police said, without signaling, and at a high speed. “I had two Jack and Cokes at the Talkhouse,” she told the arresting officer. Ms. Gregg, who was convicted of misdemeanor drunken driving in 2012, making the new charge a felony, was taken to Cedar Street headquarters , where her breath test produced a reported reading of almost .21. The high reading raised the charge to the aggravated level. “I want to see m...

Stuyvesant Town goes green: How the 70-year-old complex is reinventing itself in a modern age

Photos courtesy of Stuyvesant Town “Think of us as a 1947 Cadillac retrofitted with a Tesla engine,” says Marynia Kruk, Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village ‘s Community Affairs Manager . Though the 80- acre residential complex ’s 110 red brick, cruciform-shaped buildings were constructed 70 years ago this month, their imposing facades are hiding an intense network of systems that, since 2011, have allowed the development to reduce its on- site carbon emissions by 6.8 percent, equal to over 17 million pounds of coal saved. To put this in perspective, that’s roughly the same savings as 3,000 drivers deciding to bike or take the train for an entire year or planting a forest of 400,000 trees. This massive sustainability push , along with new ownership (Blackstone Group and Canadian investment firm Ivanhoe Cambridge bought the complex for $5.3 billion in October 2015), updated amenities, and an affordable housing commitment , is driving Manhattan’s  largest apartment complex  into t...

Rostov-On-Don Residents Warned Of Threats Before Deadly Fire

Valentina Livshits says the mysterious visitors came to her in Rostov-on-Don about a month ago, offering to buy her plot of land in the center of the southern Russian city at a knockdown price. The two men said they were "realtors" who "must report to the head of the city administration" about their "work with residents," Livshits, 62, told RFE/RL's Russian Service . "They got very upset when I refused. They vowed that the court wouldn't rule in my favor and that I'd simply be kicked out of my home," she said. Stories of similar ominous visits to the neighborhood by unidentified men had been bubbling for weeks before a massive fire tore through the area on August 21, damaging or destroying 123 residential buildings and killing one man . Numerous locals believe the blaze was deliberately set amid a battle for land in a rundown district that locals call "Govnyarka," or "Crapville." The neighborhood is not far fr...

Is Houston Prioritizing Industry Over the Health of Its Communities?

Image
As Houston plots a sustainable path forward, it’s leaving fenceline communities behind. By Raj Mankad August 15, 2017 This article originally appeared on Grist. Juan Parras gives one hell of a tour of Houston’s east side. He’s charming and funny. Wearing a beret, he strikes an old-world look, like he might lead you to a cafe on a plaza. He doesn’t charge a fee for his services. After all, you’re on a “toxic tour,” and Parras is on a mission. Parras grew up in fifties West Texas . He remembers segregated schools, the restaurants that wouldn’t serve him, the unpaved roads, and the people who lived closest to the local refinery. Those experiences led him to a career as a social justice advocate . The resident of Houston’s heavily industrial east side has worked in a city housing department , for a union, for a law clinic, and on a campaign that stopped a PVC factory from being built in Louisiana’s “Cancer Alley.” For the last decade, he has served as executive director of Texas Enviro...

Why Did Cedar Grove Close?

Image
Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at 4 a.m. Cedar Grove closed this week just shy of a year after it opened on Cedar Springs Road ." /> Cedar Grove closed this week just shy of a year after it opened on Cedar Springs Road . Beth Rankin For Tim McEneny, principal at Dallas restaurant group NL Group , the closing of Cedar Springs bar and brunch spot Cedar Grove wasn 't as abrupt as it seemed. "Cedar Grove was just exhausting, and it was just bleeding cash," McEneny said in a Tuesday afternoon phone interview with the Dallas Observer . After opening in June 2016, the restaurant closed this week following what McEneny said was a bustling Sunday drag brunch . NL Group has operated concepts in Cedar Grove's space — at the base of the Ilume Apartments at  4123 Cedar Springs Road — for nine years, first as Dish Cedar Springs and then as Cedar Grove. That location was often a struggle, McEneny says. After closing Dish and relocating it to Preston Hollow in early 2016, N...

Korper family endures an insidious, skin-crawling infestation: A Greater Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Among 12-year-old Princeton Korper's daily household responsibilities : Fold the family's laundry, mind his three younger siblings when their mom is away - and wipe cockroach egg sacs off the kitchen counter. On a summer evening, before he is allowed to join his friends outside, Princeton matter-of-factly goes about this revolting task. Spray, spray, wipe. Sigh. The bugs are getting worse, his mom, Contessa, says. Their colony within her five-bedroom apartment is growing to unnerving proportions. At the arrival of dusk, she says, the insidious insects brazenly explore the family's cabinets, furniture and living space, dropping their egg sacs just about everywhere. Contessa says she loses sleep, waking up often to swat that creepy-crawly feeling from her neck. As she speaks, a roach scurries down the face of the stove behind her and climbs into a clean, empty pot sitting on a burner. For this reason, all of their dishes must be scrubbed before they are u...

Fines surge in crackdown on Airbnb owners in Paris

(MENAFN - AFP) Fines imposed against owners renting their Paris apartments out on Airbnb surged more than tenfold in the first half of 2017 thanks to more rigorous monitoring, city authorities said Friday. Thirty-one owners of 128 units were slapped with a total of 615,000 euros (723,000) in fines for renting them out for more than the city limit of 120 days per year, city hall official Ian Brossat told AFP . "These numbers do not reflect an explosion in the number of rental offers but in the effectiveness of the monitoring" by a team of 25 agents deployed by the city, Brossat said. "We are pleased to see that the courts have a heavier hand than before," he added. The maximum fine for the offence doubled in November to 50,000 euros. Paris is one of Airbnb's top markets, with some 65,000 sites listed. Another 35,000 are available from similar online platforms . The city has slapped limits on the short-term rental of apartments and rooms as they compete with hot...
