BRISTOL - A Bristol man arrested last week allegedly admitted to participating in a gang-related shooting on Davis Drive last year. Keith “Fleet” Gainey, 28, of 187 Surrey Drive, was charged Friday in connection with the shooting of 34-year-old Vanessa Vazquez, of Terryville, who was shot six times in the upper torso on July 11, 2016. Gainey, the second suspect to be arrested in the case, is facing charges of attempted murder, first-degree assault, illegally discharging a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit and first- degree reckless endangerment . The day of the shooting, Vazquez was on Davis Drive visiting her friend, Christopher “Little” Solis, according to the arrest warrant affidavit . The warrant also said Vazquez has “strong ties” to the “DooWop” street gang - which reportedly controls the Cambridge Park housing unit - and Solis is a part of it. Jury to get Itasca County beheading case Friday

Image
The 22-year-old didn't receive the protection he sought. But he still took the witness stand Thursday . An emotional Greniger recalled to jurors how he saw his sister, Kayleene, and her boyfriend, Joseph Christen Thoresen , tie up 20-year-old David Haiman in the bedroom of their Grand Rapids apartment . He also testified about returning later and finding the bloody aftermath of an assault on the Hibbing man. After Greniger admitted to a series of drug-related crimes from the witness stand, Itasca County chief prosecutor Todd Webb asked him why he agreed to testify without immunity. "The kid deserves justice ," he testified. "Whatever he did, he didn't deserve to die. He didn't deserve to go through what he did." Greniger was the penultimate witness on the case's fourth and final day of testimony. The prosecution rested its case Thursday — as did the defense, which did not call any witnesses. Thoresen, 36, is charged with four counts of murder in...

‘My Kids Are by Themselves’

An East Hampton woman is facing felony charges of aggravated drunken driving , as well two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, following her arrest last week. According to the East Hampton Village police , Amber Elizabeth Gregg , 27, left her two children, a 4-year-old and a 7-month-old baby, alone in her apartment while she was out drinking on the morning of Aug. 16. She was almost home at 4 a.m. when she was arrested, at the wheel of a 2001 Hyundai, in the parking lot off Newtown Lane, just before the North Main Street intersection . She had turned into the lot, police said, without signaling, and at a high speed. “I had two Jack and Cokes at the Talkhouse,” she told the arresting officer. Ms. Gregg, who was convicted of misdemeanor drunken driving in 2012, making the new charge a felony, was taken to Cedar Street headquarters , where her breath test produced a reported reading of almost .21. The high reading raised the charge to the aggravated level. “I want to see m...

Shine on, dude. Cops responding to a call about a shirtless guy trying to get into a Fort Pierce apartment found Austin Lee Young , who they say reeked of booze, according to his arrest affidavit, reports Will Greenlee in his Off the Beat blog for TCPalm.com in Stuart.   After Young allegedly told officers a man who lived in the apartment was rude to his wife, cops told him to stay away. When young walked over to his place, he flashed his full moon to the cops while slapping it, saying, "kiss my (expletive) pigs," according to his arrest affidavit. No word on whether he had a heavenly body. Officers then showed him the dark side of the moon. Get the DUHtails and arrest affidavit at Will Greenlee's Off the Beat blog at TCPalm.com in Stuart. Millions spent to 'preserve' Rio 2016's legacy

Image
When Poliana Okimoto stepped onto the podium with a 10km open water Olympic bronze medal around her neck she thought her life was about to change forever. Gleefully accepting Brazil 's first ever swimming medal , the 34-year-old allowed herself to get caught up in euphoria sweeping the country. Fast forward 12 months , though, and things feel very different. After the athletes left Rio , so too did the optimism as political scandals, including millions of pounds of public money allegedly stolen in bribes for Olympic constructions projects , plunged the country into economic chaos.  Rio de Janeiro itself declared itself bankrupt just days after the Olympics closing ceremony , with no more money to pay suppliers to the Games, while hospitals, schools and the police have born the brunt of drastic cuts to public services . public money allegedly stolen in bribes for construction projects , which have plunged the country into economic chaos. Taylor Swift appears in court for jury selection in groping case

Image
Songstress Taylor Swift is about to sing in a whole different way. Swift appeared in court in Denver for jury selection in a trial to settle opposing lawsuits filed over whether she was groped by disc jockey David Mueller in 2013. Wearing a white dress under a black jacket, she looked on as lawyers and a judge tried to whittle down a pool of 60 potential jurors to an eight-member jury. Potential jurors had to answer dozens of questions, according to a pre- trial survey obtained by TMZ.com. They were asked if they’d ever purchased a Swift album, attended one of her concerts or watched one of her videos. Speculation swirled Monday around a photo the gossip site says Swift tried to keep from public view, arguing that it would prejudice the jury pool. A judge ruled in her favor months ago . An explainer of Taylor Swift's legal battle against Denver DJ It shows Taylor standing between Mueller and his girlfriend. It’s not clear how the photo leaked or whe...

BCA: Blood DNA shows match in Itasca County beheading trial

Investigators found dozens of bloodstains and bloody objects — including a machete and a knife — during a June 2016 search of Joseph Christen Thoresen and Kayleene Danielle Greniger 's apartment. A forensic scientist with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension testified that DNA from the machete blade and a bloodstain on the couple's closet door came from David Haiman, whose decapitated body was found in a remote area north of Ball Club in rural Itasca County last summer. Thoresen, 36, is charged with first- degree premeditated murder , first-degree murder while committing kidnapping, intentional second-degree murder and unintentional second-degree murder while committing second-degree assault. Greniger — who has given a variety of accounts describing the killing — pleaded guilty in February to second-degree murder while committing second-degree assault. On the opening day of Thoresen's trial, Greniger told jurors that Thoresen and Haiman had forced her to par...

Fired UBS Adviser Reignites Palm Beach Scandal Over Rich Widow

Image
“Holy crap!” That’s how Craig Price, a UBS AG senior vice president , told securities regulators he reacted when he saw the $2,600 tab for a client-development dinner he attended at an upscale Palm Beach , Florida, restaurant. It wasn’t the size of the bill that stunned him. It was who paid for it -- an ailing, 90-year-old UBS client. The client wasn’t even at the dinner, but the broker who managed her trust was. So was the broker’s girlfriend, a longtime confidant of the client who had power of attorney over the trust. The trust paid the bill. Price dug deeper . He says he ultimately discovered bigger charges to the trust: a Bentley in the girlfriend’s name, a trip to Toronto on a private jet and an attempted fund transfer to buy a penthouse apartment in the girlfriend’s name. Nancy Tsai and Dennis Melchior Photographer: Patrick McMullan/PMC Price alerted his superiors, setting off a chain of events that would become tabloid fodder. The broker, Dennis Melchior, was quickly fired fo...
