A Week of Mining Seattle's Craigslist Apartment Pricing

Image
Everyone is freaking out over San Francisco astronomically high rent prices right now when Seattle real-estate isn’t that far behind. I was walking down the street once in the university district around the University of Washington when I saw construction being built. And then more construction. And then MORE construction down the block. Ridiculous. Looking at a half-torn up flyer, the prices for these new apartments coming out in 2015 were around 1300 per bedroom for a two bedroom apartment ! I quickly went home and started trying to figure out how fast rent was rising in Seattle. One fun way to do this was by working on a project that I have since put off for school back in November. Since reliably the best place to find apartments has been on Craigslist, I created a script using Scrapy to grab listings of apartments on Seattle craigslist and filtered them for the zipcodes within the Seattle boundaries . I manually ran the script for about a week and after filtering out duplicate p...

EU probes Bayer’s planned buyout of Monsanto

ANTITRUST EU agency to probe Bayer’s acquisition of Monsanto The European Union’s antitrust watchdog said Tuesday that it has launched a probe into German chemical maker Bayer ’s planned acquisition of US seed and weed- killer company Monsanto . The European Commission, which polices competition in Europe, said it has concerns that the merger may reduce competition in areas like pesticides and seeds. Monsanto last year accepted an offer from Bayer to pay $57 billion to its shareholders and assume $9 billion in debt. Were it to go ahead, the buyout would create the world’s largest integrated pesticides and seeds company. The commission says it will also look into whether the move would hinder the access of competitors to distributors and farmers. — ASSOCIATED PRESS ANTITRUST Brazilian watchdog questions AT&T’s deal for Time Warner Brazil’s antitrust watchdog said AT&T Inc.’s $85. 4 billion deal for Time Warner Inc. poses a high risk to competition, a potential complication...

‘Boom-mates’ find a niche amid Bellingham housing crisis

Image
As housing prices in Western Washington continue through the roof, some Bellingham millennials have saved money by becoming “boom-mates” with empty-nest couples with space to rent. Baby boomers have been taking the blame recently for many of society’s ills, but research by the real estate firm Trulia could put this “worst generation” at the cutting edge of a way to ease the housing crunch in Whatcom County. My current landlord is very responsive to things like maintenance requests. Stephanie Allen, Bellingham “I used to do this for a few years,” said Michael Godwin of Bellingham in response to a social media inquiry . “I rented a mother-in-law suite from an older couple whose kids were old enough to be out of the house.” Godwin said he paid about $550 a month including utilities for a room in the Geneva- Sudden Valley area from 2013-2016. “I feel like it saved me money insofar as it was the cheapest way for me to live by myself,” Godwin said. “Had I opted for an apartment with room...

Hollywood has preserved its historic downtown through the development of the vibrant ArtsPark at Young Circle. With open space and interactive fountains, ArtsPark hosts free concerts and art and cultural festivals, particularly in the comfortable winter months . Hollywood?s beach area also has a historic core ? a seaside promenade developed in the 1920s called the Broadwalk . (It?s not made of wood; don?t call it a boardwalk!) The 2.5 mile- long paved thoroughfare is full of walkers, joggers, skaters and bicyclists, who pass the sand and surf on one side and mom-and-po...

Long Island Real Estate is Changing

Image
The Ronkonkoma Hub could create a reverse commute from New York City image: tritec They’ve been called the selfie generation, entitled and lazy. But Millennials are now the largest generation and, after a decade of moving away from New York’s metro Long Island region , they are beginning to stick around. The number of people aged 20 to 34 living on Long Island rose 7 .6 percent from 2010 to 2015 according to a report released by Long Island Association in June. Despite the stereotypes, experts see the increase as reason for optimism. “It’s vitally important, particularly for businesses that make their home here,” said Robert Loscalzo, the chief operating officer of Tritec Real Estate Company, which specializes in the type of mixed-use housing this generation favors. “You need a vibrant workforce and from the standpoint of job creation it’s vital that companies have a source of labor.” But a home doesn’t necessarily mean a house, especially for Millennials. Nationwide, 34.1 percent of...
