Le Havre is a Normandy must-see that is packed full of architecture marvels - Thomas Deacon

Image
As you walk through Le Havre it’s hard to imagine that 80% of it was destroyed through bombing in the Second World War. Full of individual architecture marvels , the town was re-built on revolutionary principles post -war and even its more recent additions prove impressive . After a leisurely cruise across the English Channel from Portsmouth harbour throughout the night, on thankfully calm waters , you arrive in Le Havre refreshed . Make no mistake, the Northern French town still holds on to a certain industrial charm. The Royal De Lux festival through the streets of Le Havre in July 2017 (Image: Thomas Deacon) Old warehouses still line the waterways and vast ships stacked high with containers still cruise in. But many of the brick warehouses that once kept stocked goods from across the world, now house office workers and students live in repurposed shipping containers stacked on top of each other as their working counterparts sail in; albeit less frequently than they once d...

Very good value for money - Review of Avanti Holiday Village, Paphos

unlike the avanti hotel, which has had millions spent on its renovation, the village is tired and unloved. Bathrooms are cruddy, dingy and shabby. Rooms are a good size but outdated, tired looking and feel unwelcoming. The pool area is beautiful but too many broken beds (actually, too many beds all together) and often covered in the detritis of the previous day's residents. The pool itself is so crowded you cant actually swim. Restaurant serves excellent food (breakfast and lunch) but is so woefully under staffed that service is fraught and staff look dejected and miserable. public facilities like loos are shabby and not cleaned regularly and the gym is a disgrace. The feeling is that the owners are cheap skates - they charge you to look your valuables away in teh room safe, they dont put a single hook on the door in the bathroom for towels, there are no hand towels or tissues in the rooms, not enough staff to make your visit welcoming and relaxed and general over crowding. spend...

24 Hours in Minneapolis' North Loop

Image
Take a whirlwind trip through the Twin Cities neighborhood of the North Loop, including everything the locals know and love—and are willing to share Named one of America’s Best Hipster Neighborhoods by Forbes, the North Loop has mastered the art of being funky and trendy, but at the same time sophisticated and independent. This area is booming, having a population that has just about tripled in the past decade, with former warehouses being transformed into apartments, boutiques and attention-grabbing restaurants, not to mention the addition of Target Field. Located on the edge of downtown Minneapolis , spend a leisurely day exploring this unique pocket of the city. Morning Grab a cup of coffee and breakfast dish at Moose & Sadie’s (try the quiche of the day, or ever- praised huevos rancheros ), then head over to One on One Bicycle Studio and rent a 3- speed Bianchi Milano to ride around the area on. They’ll also set you up with a helmet, lock and map of the area, as well as offe...

Serena Williams on Pregnancy, Power, and Coming Back to Center Court

Image
On a Sunday morning in July—specifically the middle Sunday of Wimbledon, when the players rest and the trampled lawns recover— Serena Williams awoke from one of those vivid dreams that are a common feature in the hormonal rush of pregnancy. In it she was competing, except that she wasn’t at Wimbledon or even on a tennis court. Instead this was the Williams Invitational, the mock-seriously titled (but very real) dance tournament that Serena and Venus Williams have mounted each spring for the better part of a decade and that, Serena explains , has gone from fun to serious to Broadway to Vegas in short order. In the dream, Serena was suspended from the ceiling, twirling inside a hoop attached to a long ribbon. (True story: Williams has an aerial-dancing coach in Florida and another in California.) Sequins and wigs may also have been involved, though the details are fuzzy. “What do you think it means?” Williams asks as her fiancĂ©, Alexis Ohanian, 34, works on coffee and soft-scrambled eg...
