East Falmouth 40B Brings Out Affordable Housing Stereotypes | Falmouth News

Plans for a Chapter 40B development on Brick Kiln Road sparked tension between members of the Falmouth Zoning Board of Appeals and the public last Thursday, August 17, when some neighbors voiced concerns about the perceived negative impacts of having affordable housing in their neighborhood. The proposed rental development , named Brick Kiln Place , would include 20 units contained in 10 ranch- style duplex buildings on 3.66 acres of land. Developers John J. DeSangro and Dana J. Wessell of Northstar Construction, doing business as Northstar Place , LLC, submitted plans for the project in January. The proposed development is unofficially located at 123 Brick Kiln Road , and would sit between two residential subdivisions on Sophie Lane and Jamie Lane, built between 1960 and 2000. Zoning consultant Stephen O. McKenzie, representing Northstar Place , noted that Mr. Wessell and Mr. DeSangro live off Brick Kiln Road themselves, and chose to build the affordable housing development...

What to Know Nina Brekelmans, 25, and Michael McLoughlin, 24, died one year ago after a fire broke out near Dupont Circle, on Riggs Place NW. D.C. officials found that the house where they rented rooms had not been inspected and was not licensed for rental. Cities across the country grapple with how to detect illegal apartments, experts say. The fire that sent flames shooting through the roof of a three-story rowhouse near Dupont Circle started on the first floor, investigators found . An electrical short sparked in the landlord’s living room, and the blaze raced upward in the historic house. Four people were inside. Nina Brekelmans awoke in the burning building and called 911, according to a lawsuit filed by her family. Firefighters arrived minutes later, but by the time they were able to reach her and her housemate Michael McLoughlin , it was too late. Brekelmans, 25, and McLoughlin, 24, were killed by the blaze June 3, 2015 at 1610 Riggs Place NW , where they each rented rooms....

Historic Victorian building to be transformed into 25 apartments (From The Argus)

A BUILDING used to train up scores of builders over the years is now to receive its own makeover to give it a new lease of life. The former City College construction and trades centre in Preston Road, Brighton, is set to be transformed into 25 apartments. Work on the transformation of the locally listed Victorian red - brick property is expected to start within the next five months and be completed by the end of next year. Brighton- based Yelo Architects said the conversion would give house hunters the rare opportunity to secure a loft apartment in the city. The scheme, which was granted planning consent by Brighton and Hove City Council planning committee last week, involves a mixture of one, two and three bedroom apartments. Developers Aligned Property bought the site in October after it became surplus to the requirements of Greater Brighton Metropolitan College , formed from the merger of City College and Northbrook College. A new £ 9 million training centre opened at ...

Stuyvesant Town goes green: How the 70-year-old complex is reinventing itself in a modern age

Image
Photos courtesy of Stuyvesant Town “Think of us as a 1947 Cadillac retrofitted with a Tesla engine,” says Marynia Kruk, Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village ‘s Community Affairs Manager . Though the 80- acre residential complex ’s 110 red brick, cruciform-shaped buildings were constructed 70 years ago this month, their imposing facades are hiding an intense network of systems that, since 2011, have allowed the development to reduce its on- site carbon emissions by 6.8 percent, equal to over 17 million pounds of coal saved. To put this in perspective, that’s roughly the same savings as 3,000 drivers deciding to bike or take the train for an entire year or planting a forest of 400,000 trees. This massive sustainability push , along with new ownership (Blackstone Group and Canadian investment firm Ivanhoe Cambridge bought the complex for $5.3 billion in October 2015), updated amenities, and an affordable housing commitment , is driving Manhattan’s  largest apartment complex  into t...

Laurel Park Station development gaining steam

Five years after Howard County planning officials approved initial plans for a major transit- oriented development next to the Laurel Park race track , the project is back on the rails. New plans for the first phase of Laurel Park Station were recently submitted to Howard County's Department of Planning and Zoning, according to DPZ Deputy Director Raj Kudchadkar . The whole project is slated to bring 1, 000 residential units – a mix of apartments, condominiums and townhouses – as well as 127,000 square feet of retail space and 650,000 square feet of office space to a 65-acre plot of land in North Laurel, currently a parking lot adjacent to the Laurel Park MARC train station . Construction will take place over a period of eight to 10 years, according to Aaron Greenfield, an attorney for Laurel Park. The project is divided into four phases. "It's a transit- oriented development , so it's smart growth," Greenfield said. Phase one will bring 220 residential unit...
