Building Playa Vista

Image
‘The physical incarnation of the new L.A.’ gets ready for launch By Joe Piasecki Playa Vista as seen last week from the Loyola Marymount University campus. Photo by Michael Kraxenberger. It isn’t every day that the leader of a sprawling metropolis takes time out to preside over the grand opening of a movie theater. But this wasn’t just any multiplex, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti would explain. Last Thursday the nine- screen Cinemark Playa Vista and XD theater became the first business to open in Runway at Playa Vista — the $260- million retail and entertainment complex that, by linking the 460- acre development ’s burgeoning technology mega -center to what will eventually be 6,000 new homes and apartments, completes Playa Vista as essentially a city unto itself. Less than two years after its April 2013 groundbreaking, Runway is only months shy of substantial completion. A 36,000-square-foot Whole Foods Market is set to open as early as May. Sixteen other businesses — restauran...

Workers follow the crowds to Chippendale, now one of Sydney's hottest office markets

Image
Ten years ago, companies would barely look twice at office space in this Sydney suburb. But today, Chippendale has undergone a reversal of fortune. With the redevelopment of old industrial sites bringing in new residents and businesses, and office workers following, it is now being billed as one of the hottest spots of the city fringe. “It’s probably even taken over from Surry Hills now as a desirable location,” says Miron Solomons, director of investment services at Colliers International. “The re-gentrification of the area following the development of Frasers’ Central Park has been huge, and it’s so close to the city and Central station with excellent infrastructure and UTS [the University of Technology Sydney] nearby. “In the last 12 months, it’s probably seen the most change of any of the suburbs close to Sydney’s CBD.” Over that period, the fringe became the fastest growing office market in the country, on Colliers’ figures, with net effective rents for A- grade space growing...

Charlottesville's Emancipation Park, site of weekend's violence, to be redesigned

Image
Emancipation Park in Charlottesville, Virginia, has become the focus of national and international media attention after this weekend’s marches, protests, and attacks at a “Unite the Right” rally led by white nationalist groups . Demonstrators and counter-protesters fought in and around the one-block-square park in downtown Charlottesville, which features, not coincidentally, a statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee. Emancipation Park as locus for violence cannot be separated from its history (or its oxidized monument to that history). As Megan Garber writes for CityLab, Charlottesville is rich with landmarks and reminders of its Confederate past —not only in Emancipation Park . Previously known as Lee Park, the name was officially changed in June 2017, a few months after Charlottesville’s city council voted to remove the statue. (The council also voted to remove a similar monument to Confederate general Stonewall Jackson from the city’s Justice, then “Jackson,” Park.) Oppo...

Stone Arch Apartments - 11 Photos - Apartments - 601 Main St SE, Northeast, Minneapolis, MN - Phone Number

8 601 Main St SE Minneapolis , MN 55414 (612) 331-8100 Living at Stone Arch was really fun. The apartments themselves are just below high end but the location is astounding it wasn't a big deal. Hallways are spacious and the interior design has a creative art based minimalistic feel . Sure we heard people upstairs and the floors hurt my feet while walking without shoes. Management is Solid here but they do have much to deal with so I don't expect an Oscar worthy performance every time I go to the office. A nice cozy tucked away albeit next to the Steel Shop which can get noisy at night but all in all a very vibrant place to live with Tremendous views of Minneapolis and easy access to stone arch bridge . I miss being here and walking to Hennepin Avenue at NIGHT while intoxicated (Honey, Bulldog, New Bohemia Etc) I now live in the North Loop and realize that Stone Arch Apt might be in the best location in the entire city. Away from Traffic, Surrounded by Nature, Nearby a Pa...

At left is Brandon Thompson. (Photo: Kitsap Sun file photo ) Owning and operating six restaurants can be complicated. Just ask Brendan McGill , founder of Hitchcock on Bainbridge Island and the fabulously popular Bruciato pizzeria across the street. On one recent morning McGill sauntered into his Hitchcock Deli, adjacent to his farm to table eatery and had to rescue a barista who was wrestling with a plugged up coffee grinder. With a few flicks of his wrists and some gentle instruction, he saved the day as customers were beginning to line up. “It’s great to be able to do most of this stuff myself,” says the 37-year-old award-winning chef and successful entrepreneur . “It’s a good ...
