A Judge’s Bid to Clean Up Brazil From the Bench

Judge Moro and Brazilian prosecutors believe that a deeper political transformation can be achieved only through sweeping changes like overhauling campaign finance rules , doing away with the de facto immunity members of Congress enjoy in office and winnowing down the vast number of political parties, to curb horse trading . None of these changes is on the table. President Michel Temer , who was charged in June with ordering a bribe to silence a jailed politician, and other powerful politicians under criminal investigation are lashing out against the judiciary. D.C. Circuit forbids seizing all electronic storage devices in computer warrant cases

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit handed down an important computer search case Friday , United States v. Griffith . The case is about computer search warrants , and specifically whether they can authorize a seizure of all devices that investigators discover that might contain the evidence sought. The frustrating part of the opinion is that there are a few different ways to interpret it, and I’m not sure which way is right. I thought I would explain why the case is important, why I’m not sure how to interpret it, and how it is in tension with other decisions. I. The Facts The facts of the case are simple. The police obtained a search warrant to search the home of a gang member suspected of involvement in a homicide. The warrant permitted the government to seize electronic storage devices in the home. The thinking was that gang members share a lot of information about their crimes, and that information was likely to be on their electronic devices such as their cellpho...

‘Heroin Truly Takes Over their Lives’

“This generation has a Superman syndrome. They think they can shoot this stuff in their body or put it up their nose and get away with it. They don’t know how dangerous it is — and they’re dropping like flies.” — Lt. Jimmy Cox, Fairfax County “ Eighty percent of overdoses occur between midnight and 4 a.m.,” he said. “And I usually get five calls a day.” — Lt. Jimmy Cox, Fairfax County Police In March 2008, Westfield High grad Alicia Lannes died of a heroin overdose at age 19.
