Case in point: An apartment going for $2,000 a month for rent in 2010 would now get $2,657 a month, a report published Wednesday from real estate search engine StreetEasy reveals. Compounding the city’s affordability crisis: rents in the city rose twice as fast as wages, according to the analysis, which compared the StreetEasy Rent Index with wage data from the city’s Department of Labor. While median rents increased 3 .9 percent a year since 2010, wages increased by 1.8 percent over the same period. Those working in the city’s lowest wage jobs were hit hardest. Low- wage earners — those in the bottom 20 percent of the workforce, which represent a little more than 800,000 of the roughly 4.1 million employed New Yorkers ...

City apartment boom moves Sydney’s population centre east

RAMPANT high- rise apartment construction in the inner city has been pulling Sydney ’s population centre east for the first time in more than 200 years of European settlement, as the housing boom pushes development up rather than out. An analysis of Australian Bureau of Statistics data showed the population centre of Sydney is now Ermington — 2km east of previous centre Rydalmere — in an area of the suburb sandwiched between Silverwater Rd and the northern bank of the Parramatta River, roughly 20km northwest of the CBD. Sydney’s centre had been south of the river in the suburb of Silverwater during the 1980s and later moved northwest to Ermington in the 1990s and west again to Rydalmere in the early 2000s before moving back to Ermington. EU probes Bayer’s planned buyout of Monsanto

ANTITRUST EU agency to probe Bayer’s acquisition of Monsanto The European Union’s antitrust watchdog said Tuesday that it has launched a probe into German chemical maker Bayer ’s planned acquisition of US seed and weed- killer company Monsanto . The European Commission, which polices competition in Europe, said it has concerns that the merger may reduce competition in areas like pesticides and seeds. Monsanto last year accepted an offer from Bayer to pay $57 billion to its shareholders and assume $9 billion in debt. Were it to go ahead, the buyout would create the world’s largest integrated pesticides and seeds company. Dozens of property owners let commissioners know how they feel about the new fee at a public hearing Tuesday night at the County Administration Building in downtown Gainesville . The commission at the end of the meeting voted unanimously to have county officials gather information about alternatives to the assessment fee for fiscal year 2019.
