Redbeard carries a backpack and a sacred calling

Image
I once saw Redbeard riding his skateboard along Otay Lakes Road . It was close to midnight, there were only a few cars on the road, and the light from the streetlamps was dim. As he snaked his way down the slope, hands in his pocket, moving toward the Sweetwater Valley —where he sleeps against the wall of the Circle K, or holds his signs along the 805 exit for spare change or spreads the good news to the people of the jungle — I thought of a verse he once shared with me, a Psalm of promises from God: For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot. When I first met Redbeard he was sitting still on a patch of grass, legs outstretched, under the shade of a large clump of bamboo-like Arundo donax , alongside a drainage ditch next to the southbound 805 freeway exit onto Bonita Roa...

Millions spent to 'preserve' Rio 2016's legacy

Image
When Poliana Okimoto stepped onto the podium with a 10km open water Olympic bronze medal around her neck she thought her life was about to change forever. Gleefully accepting Brazil 's first ever swimming medal , the 34-year-old allowed herself to get caught up in euphoria sweeping the country. Fast forward 12 months , though, and things feel very different. After the athletes left Rio , so too did the optimism as political scandals, including millions of pounds of public money allegedly stolen in bribes for Olympic constructions projects , plunged the country into economic chaos.  Rio de Janeiro itself declared itself bankrupt just days after the Olympics closing ceremony , with no more money to pay suppliers to the Games, while hospitals, schools and the police have born the brunt of drastic cuts to public services . public money allegedly stolen in bribes for construction projects , which have plunged the country into economic chaos. Fire forces 39 people out of their homes in West Chester

WEST CHESTER TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Fast- moving flames tore through four apartments in a West Chester complex Monday , forcing 39 tenants out of their homes and sending three to the hospital with minor injuries. Wind rapidly spread the fire that started on the second floor of Meadow Ridge Apartments throughout the complex; workers Monday night were busy boarding up windows and patching the roof while occupants boarded with friends or the American Red Cross . "We didn't even know how it happened," said 11-year-old Brighton Odai, who said he had seen a third- floor tenant jump from her window to escape the fire. Beekeeping interest grows in southern Illinois, St Louis MO

Image
The number of bee colonies and beekeepers in Illinois is on the rise, yet the bees are in decline. And getting started as a beekeeper would cost about $300. Or maybe it’s a lot more. Like many other bee-related questions, the answer depends on whom you ask. “If you ask 10 people you get 10 different answers, there’s no hard and fast answers,” laughs Scott Wesemann , 54. Wesemann and his brother, Mark Wesemann, have been keeping bees at Scott’s Collinsville home since about April. They are helping increase the ranks of beekeepers in Madison, St. Clair and Monroe counties, which was at 349 in 2016, up from 171 in 2012. The Wesemann brothers spent about $700 on the hive boxes, bees, beekeeper suits , smokers and the like. While they hope to get some honey by next year — “honey next year, or — I love ’em, but otherwise I’m out,” says Mark — other beekeepers just like the insects. Scott plans to keep the hives regardless of the honey output; he enjoys watching them. One time I didn’t have ...

Serena Williams on Pregnancy, Power, and Coming Back to Center Court

Image
On a Sunday morning in July—specifically the middle Sunday of Wimbledon, when the players rest and the trampled lawns recover— Serena Williams awoke from one of those vivid dreams that are a common feature in the hormonal rush of pregnancy. In it she was competing, except that she wasn’t at Wimbledon or even on a tennis court. Instead this was the Williams Invitational, the mock-seriously titled (but very real) dance tournament that Serena and Venus Williams have mounted each spring for the better part of a decade and that, Serena explains , has gone from fun to serious to Broadway to Vegas in short order. In the dream, Serena was suspended from the ceiling, twirling inside a hoop attached to a long ribbon. (True story: Williams has an aerial-dancing coach in Florida and another in California.) Sequins and wigs may also have been involved, though the details are fuzzy. “What do you think it means?” Williams asks as her fiancĂ©, Alexis Ohanian, 34, works on coffee and soft-scrambled eg...

The recent influx of new workers combined with near-zero residential development during the recession gave birth to a classic supply-and-demand scenario that saw the cost of housing skyrocket in the Biggest Little City.
