Boulder police are investigating a fatal shooting at the San Juan Del Centro apartments that happened shortly before 2 a.m. on Saturday.

The shooting occurred inside a vehicle in a parking lot at the complex, police said in a news release, and the shooting victim, a man in his 20s, was taken to Boulder Community Health's Foothill's Hospital where he died from his injuries.

Police and Boulder firefighters were seen taking down crime scene tape in a parking lot near the apartment complex's leasing office at about 10:30 a.m. The leasing office also serves as a Boulder police substation.

A resident who did not give her name said the complex is generally quiet but there has been "violence" during the past few weeks, a possible reference to 18-year-old Bryan Silva-Escalante, who was arrested in late July for allegedly beating up two teenage boys and striking one of them with a beer bottle.

A man who spoke on condition that his name not be used said he was friends with the victim and said the shooting was a suicide. Police have not not released any information on the nature of the shooting but have said there is no continuing threat to the community.

The man said his friend was 24-years-old and had been depressed as of late. He said he heard a gunshot and saw the police arriving at the scene but did not witness the shooting. Another witness at the scene said the victim had been shot in the head.

The man said the apartment complex is generally quiet and there is a sense of community among the people who live there.

"We come together," he said.

The incident remains under investigation, and police have asked that anyone with information regarding the case call police dispatch at 303-441-3333. People with information who wish to remain anonymous may contact the Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Tips may also be submitted through the Crime Stoppers website.
