An apartment fire damaged a dozen units late Sunday night, the Sacramento Metro Fire Department said.

The fire started before 10 p.m. at the apartment complex in the 10700 block of Fair Oaks Boulevard, the fire department said.

The fire caused about $400,000 worth of damage. The 12 units were damaged by either fire, smoke or water. The Red Cross is assisting displaced residents.

The fire department said an unattended BBQ pit started the blaze.
