Some area shelters waive pet adoption fee

County Animal Services along with a number of local shelters are waiving pet adoption fees Aug. 19 as part of Clear the Shelters adoption drive, an effort to get as many pets as possible into permanent homes.

More than 300 animals are currently up for adoption at the County’s three animal care facilities in Carlsbad, Bonita and central San Diego. Animals include dogs, cats and rabbits along with some chickens, turtles and guinea pigs. In addition, about a dozen other shelters are participating throughout San Diego County

Dogs and cats will be altered, vaccinated and microchipped; rabbits will be altered and microchipped, all at no cost to the adopter.

Clear the Shelters is part of a campaign by NBC-owned television stations and Telemundo to find caring homes for the millions of pets who end up animal shelters across the country each year. Cities nationwide participate in the adoption drive. Since the first Clear the Shelters adoption drives began in 2015, more than 73,000 pets have been adopted during the one-day event.

The following animal shelters are slated to offer free adoption on Aug. 19:

County Animal Services North Shelter, 2481 Palomar Airport Road, Carlsbad.

County Animal Services Central Shelter, 5480 Gaines Street, San Diego.

County Animal Services South Shelter, 5821 Sweetwater Road, Bonita.

San Diego Humane Society (Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego Campuses)

Chula Vista Animal Care Facility

Rancho Coastal Humane Society

City of El Cajon Animal Services

Friends of Cats

San Diego House Rabbit Society

Shelly's Shelter

San Diego Chihuahua Rescue

Wee Companions

Hours are generally from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but vary from shelter to shelter.

To see the animals, stop by the shelter or visit the adoptions page.

To speed up the process, go online, download the adoption application and fill it out at home. Renters should also bring a copy of their lease to show that pets are allowed in their apartment.
