One-third of the residents of Saxony Apartments come from other countries, influencing the way the buildings near the UW-Madison campus are run.

Mary Gomez, property manager, said at the start of each rental year, she spends time teaching some residents the basics, such as how to run a garbage disposal, use a gas stove and hook up a phone.

"We have to get them on the bus," Gomez said. "You're like a mother hen."

The Saxony also loans out vacuum cleaners, mops, hair dryers and irons and will provide other cleaning supplies.

"I try to make them feel very welcome and let them know we appreciate that they came," she said. …
