Saratoga Springs gun show pulls Adolf Hitler items
This year's gun show at the Saratoga Springs City Center is in the spotlight yet again.
A desk, chair and valet taken from Adolf Hitler's apartment were to be displayed at the event next weekend before an auction in Ohio, until organizers heard concerns from residents. After speaking with city leaders, organizers pulled the items from the show.
The controversy comes less than two weeks after violence erupted at a neo-Nazi march in Virginia. David Petronis, the show's co-organizer, felt it wouldn't do any harm.
"We were going to set a mannequin on a Nazi flag sitting on top of the desk with a US flag draped over him, and put a dagger through the swastika with the words 'end of Nazism,' " said Petronis.
Saratoga Springs Mayor Joanne Yepsen, along with residents, felt the display was not needed.
"To bring in something that has to do with Hitler and the ugly past is just not welcome here in our city," said Yepsen. "This is a welcoming city. We don't want anything to drive people away or be offended or to provoke hate."
While the items won't be on display, Petronis hopes it won't deter people from attending.
"My auctioneer is looking for other things to bring to the show to replace the items, but otherwise, I hope we'll have a great show," he said.
