Thieves hit 18 vehicles at East Atlanta apartment complex

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Atlanta police are investigating a rash of vehicle break-ins at an East Atlanta apartment complex.

Police said thieves smashed in the windows on at least 18 vehicles overnight Monday at Enso Apartments on Glenwood Avenue in Glenwood Park.

Reports indicate in all, there have been 65 vehicles broken into in the past year and a half. Police said that is an unusually high number at one location.

"It is a concern," said Sgt. Greg Lyon.

However, police do report break-ins in the neighborhood are down seven percent last year from 2013, though they said they would like to get the figures even lower.

"It's hard for me to tell a resident crime is down if a resident is a victim of a crime, or his neighbor is a victim of a crime," said Lyon. "It's all perspective."

Lyon said police have increased patrols in the area and are on alert for anything suspicious.

"This is the second time my vehicle has been broken into, and it's horrible," said Ron James as he vacuumed up shattered glass from his Porsche on Monday.

Resident Frank Jordan said his car has been broken into three times in recent months.

"Yes, they're real bold," said Jordan of the thieves. "We do have high-definition cameras. You see one of them up there, so they give face recognition and everything. They were really bold."

Managers at Enso referred questions to the corporate office in Duluth on Monday, but calls were not returned.

CBS46 News returned to the apartment complex on Wednesday to get answers about security.

"I have to refer you to the corporate office," said a clerk at the desk. "I'm very sorry.  I don't make that decision."

Police said apartment managers did provide surveillance and investigators are now reviewing it.

They believe the suspects in the most recent break-ins may be driving a four-door, black Nissan Rogue with a smashed in rear window covered in plastic. The vehicle has a black-and-white drive out tag.

"I'm really shocked, really shocked and surprised," said Raycardo Shannon, whose wife works in the area.
