Accused Victorian siege gun seller wins bail


A Melbourne man accused of supplying the shotgun used by Brighton siege terrorist Yacqub Khayre has been granted bail.

Khayre killed hotel clerk Kai Hao, 36, and injured three police officers during the siege at a Brighton apartment building on June 5.

Father-of-two George Matte-Hado, 37, is accused of illegally selling a double-barrelled shotgun for $2000 to a middleman in the car park of a housing estate in May.

Khayre later used the weapon to shoot dead Mr Kai and fire at police before dying in a hail of return bullets.

Matt-Hado successfully applied for bail in the Victorian Supreme Court on Monday, arguing he had no idea what the gun would be used for.

"There is no evidence that the accused knew of the intentions of the ultimate user, much less had any sympathy for the cause of the user," Justice Cameron Macaulay said as he released Matte-Hado on bail.

Matte-Hado faces six charges, including two counts of unlicensed dealing of firearms.
