What are cheap and safe areas to buy an apartment in in Maryland or DC?

North West Redline: Dupont to Friendship Heights.  (Washington DC)

Orange Line West: Courthouse to East Falls Church (Virginia)

Yellow/Blue Going South: Pentagon City/Crystal City

You can find a place with people for probably $600/650+

You can probably find a place by yourself for $1000 to $1250

* I don't know Maryland well enough to comment.

Public transportation in the city is quite popular.

BTW, without knowing where you are working, my guess is that you are going to want something pretty Metro Accessible.  Perhaps within a 15 to 20 minute walk of the Metro.  Or within 15 to 20 minute walk of a major busline that takes you within a couple blocks of your place of work.

Update:
Virginia may be the best place to buy price-wise.  (that is to say Orange or Gray going west)

There is some more expensive stuff in the Northwest thats pretty safe and that might be reasonable.
