A car crashed into an apartment in Costa Mesa Tuesday, but no one was injured.

The vehicle ended up “a good five feet into the apartment” at 2110 Newport Blvd., according to Costa Mesa Fire Department Capt. Chris Coates.

The driver reported that the gas pedal got stuck when she started the car, according to Coates, who said the cause of the 10 a.m. crash was under investigation.

The man and woman who rent the apartment weren’t home at the time, he said. One of their pet cats was recovered, but the other was missing.

A neighbor with special needs presented some challenges for firefighters as they evacuated the building, but he was allowed back in when firefighters shored up part of the red-tagged complex, Coates said.

The apartment damaged by the car cannot be occupied until the landlord gets a licensed contractor in there to fix it, he said.
