Kittens abandoned in Virginia Beach apartment without food, water for 40 hours

VIRGINIA BEACH — Two cats and three kittens were removed from a Virginia Beach apartment after they were abandoned there without food or water.
The cats were discovered by an exterminator on June 22 in an empty unit at Patriot Pointe Apartments, located in the 100 block of Coral Gables Court.
Apartment manager Terri Dray said they were left in an apartment that didn’t have electricity for air conditioning, according to documents filed in Virginia Beach Circuit Court.
Virginia Beach Animal Control sealed the apartment and left a 24-hour notice for the cats’ owners. After a day passed, officials came back to the apartment and noticed that all of the seals were intact, meaning no one had entered the apartment.
Documents show that the cats were in the apartment without food, water or air conditioning for more than 40 hours. Officials tried to contact the cats’ owners to no avail.
Authorities rescued a brown tabby cat, a black cat and three small kittens who are about two months old.
There are two suspects in this case, but neither has been arrested. The cats are currently being held by animal control, but a judge will decide if they will go back to their owners on July 10, animal control supervisor Meghan Conti wrote in an email.
Conti did not confirm if the cats would be euthanized if a judge decides they are the property of animal control.
