Mom Charged With DWI; 2 Kids, 4, And 7 Months Old, Found Home Alone: Cops
EAST HAMPTON, NY — A woman was charged with driving drunk in East Hampton — and her two children, ages 4 and 7 months, were found home alone, police said.
According to East Hampton Village Police, Amber Elizabeth Gregg, 27, of East Hampton, was arrested on North Main Street on August 16 at 4:55 a.m. and charged with second degree operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, a felony, second degree driving with .08 of 1% or more alcohol, a felony, and speed not reasonable and prudent and operating in violation of restrictions, both violations.
Gregg kept stating that she "needed to see her kids," police said. When told that she was being arrested and charged with DWI and could not "go see" her children, Gregg then stated that "the babysitter may have left her children alone upstairs" in her apartment, police said.
An officer checked the apartment and found two children, a 7-month-old infant and a 4-year old, without any "parent, guardian, or a person legally in charge with the care of the children," police said.
Gregg was observed driving a 2001 Hyundai and failing to signal, making a right turn into Schenck's parking lot and driving at an unreasonable speed, police said. Upon investigation, her breath had the odor of an alcoholic beverage, her eyes were red and glassy and her speech was slurred; she also had trouble locating the paperwork when asked for her registration and was unsteady on her feet, police said. She failed all standard field sobriety tests, police said.
