Hatfield-McCoy Trail tours, gear, lodging planned for new Crazy Mountain Cycles | News
BLUEWELL — A vacant Route 52 storefront will soon have new life as the quarters of a business offering lodging, ATV and motorcycle riding accessories and tours of the Pocahontas Trail, Mercer County’s branch of the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System.
The former Mercer County Choppers building near the intersection of Route 52 and Route 20 in Bluewell will soon be the home of Crazy Mountain Cycles. The grand opening is scheduled for Sept. 1, according to Mark Bullis of Wilkesboro, NC. Bullis doesn’t plan to offer motorcycles or ATVs, but he will be selling related merchandise and offering both lodging and trail tours.
“It’s going to be lodging upstairs,” he said. “There are four apartments upstairs, and then in the store there will be merchandise like helmets, goggles, gloves, Hatfield-McCoy Trail passes, t-shirts and things like that.”
Bullis has been coming to West Virginia since the 1980s to ride Polaris RZR side-by-sides. During those visits, he often stayed at one of the four apartments.
“It was a nice place to stay,” he said.
Besides selling accessories and related merchandise, Crazy Mountain Cycles will be offering tours of the Hatfield-McCoy Trail.
“Say, for example, you’ve never ridden and you don’t own a Polaris RZR. They would come to our store and you would rent a tour. We would supply the RZR in the tour,” Bullis said. “Then we would take them for three or four hours of riding and go to the Corner Shop in Bramwell for lunch; and, of course, we’ll take them for three or four more hours of riding around the Pocahontas Trail and Indian Ridge. We’ll offer the rooms. They can go for a day ride or a two-day ride, which will include rental of the machine and a nice stay.”
When Bullis was asked why he like the Hatfield-McCoy Trail system, he replied, “Those trails are the smoothest and some of the funnest trails there are. It’s well maintained.”
