Firefighter injured, residents displaced after fire at Westlake apartment complex (video)

WESTLAKE, Ohio -- A North Ridgeville firefighter suffered minor injuries during an early-Thursday fire that displaced residents of a Westlake apartment complex.

Debris fell and hit the firefighter in the head. He was taken to a hospital for treatment but has since been released, according to the North Ridgeville Fire Department.

No one else was injured in the fire that broke out just before 4 a.m. at the Barrington Place Apartments on Detroit Road. Twelve residents were taken to the Westlake Recreation Center for shelter.

Firefighters from multiple departments arrived at the complex and found the attic engulfed in flames. It took several hours to knock down the fire, which caused significant damage to the building.

The cause of the fire remains unknown. No additional information is available at this time, the Westlake Fire Department said.

Residents described the fire in 911 calls released by police. One man said he woke up and saw smoke and flames.

"I heard a loud noise and woke up, and I looked outside and saw bright lights," the caller told the dispatcher. "It's starting to smoke inside the apartment and there's a visible flame."

A second caller spoke with a dispatcher for approximately 10 seconds. The dispatcher told her to try to exit the building.

Detroit Road was closed between Bassett Road and Settlers Reserve Way following the fire. It reopened about 9 a.m., Westlake police said.
