Last updated 10:33 p.m. ET (AP) VIRGINIA BEACH , Va. - A fighter jet that malfunctioned just after takeoff hurtled into a Virginia Beach apartment complex on Friday in a spectacular crash that sent flames and black smoke billowing from the rubble. The two pilots managed to eject just before impact, suffering minor injuries along with five others on the ground. Several residents described hearing a loud explosion and looking out their windows to see the red and orange blaze. In the confusion that followed, two men helped one of the bloodied pilots from the two- seat F18 Hornet move to safety. "Oh, my God, I heard three really loud explosions, then the black smoke went up high in the sky," said 71-year-old Felissa Ezell, who lives in a townhouse near the crash site. By evening, emergency crews were searching through the charred remains of the complex, where some 40 apartment units were damaged or destroyed. No fatalities had been reported. The company paid $6.2 million for the 34,000-square-foot site in September 2008. Construction liens can either be a sign of financial trouble (see Hoffman Construction's lien against the Waterfront Pearl) or just a sign of a dispute between contractor and developer. The developer, Alliance Residential Co. of Phoenix, did not return a phone call this week. The contractor could not be reached. Following a false start last year, the Stambo's Group appears to have found a buyer for the abandoned former Morlynn Insulators factory in Yarraville, six kilometres west of the CBD. Stambo's Group, which runs a property arm alongside numerous food -related businesses, is understood to be pocketing more than $20 million from the campaign, which targeted apartment builders . If you’re calling accommodations providers in La Grande trying to make a reservation for this weekend, you may be pleasantly surprised to find a few options available. Few is the operative word, however. Crowds of visitors traveling to the region are projected to be hundreds of thousands. Eastern Oregon University , which is renting out campus dorms during the eclipse weekend, has reported that only five to eight suites of the original 60 are still available. Each suite contains two or three rooms. “We do have a handful still open, but we’re still trying to catch up,” said EOU Director of Residence Life Jeremy Jones . “We don’t do this very often.” Jones said EOU uses the dorms for conferences and teams during the summer, but nothing like this. Jones is confident the EOU rooms will be full by Friday. He estimated that nearly 200 people will stay in the dorms for three nights. “We hope we’re adding value to the community and help get people here to utilize the restaurants,” Jones said....

Little Rock police say a robber took a man’s cash and cellphone, then demanded the shoes off his feet Thursday afternoon . The robber approached a man and woman around 3:30 p.m. at Fair Oaks Apartments on West 36th Street , according to a Little Rock Police Department report . He was wearing a red shirt and carrying a black and silver pistol, the report said. The victims told police he demanded everything out of the man’s pocket. After the man handed over $865 and his cellphone, the robber told him to take off his shoes, police said. When officers arrived at the scene, they searched the apartment complex for the robber and two others, police said. It wasn't clear how the other two people were involved. As of Friday, no arrests had been made.
