Historic preservation is not the bogeyman for finding cheap apartments in DC

Image
Today's Post has an article, "The new housing market: Why it’s so hard to find a cheap apartment in Washington, D.C.," with this line about strategies for producing more and lower cost housing : In D.C., you could even ditch the large historic districts that make it extremely difficult to build anything substantial in many desirable neighborhoods. Too bad it's wrong.  (The article doesn't say all that much considering.) The reason that it's hard to find cheap apartments in DC, is that relative to demand, there is lack of inventory. But it's not because of historic districcts. It's because historically, DC had been a small city relatively speaking, and not an industrial city, which would have led to the construction of more and higher capacity apartment buildings and tenements. Instead, especially in the late 1800s and into the early part of the 1900s, mostly single family housing (rowhouses) was constructed in those inner city neighborhoods th...

Brainstorming ideas to get perks of a "centrally located apartment" for cheap (in DC)

I am trying to think of a less expensive way to get some of the benefits of having a nice, centrally located apartment . For example, I like saving money on a cheaper place to live. I try to tell myself with the thousands I'm saving, I can afford to take more girls on dates, can pay for more cabs, and can afford flights to South America and Asia and so on, but the truth is there are just some situations that you cannot experience in your day to day life without having access to a nice apartment in a great location. I even remember in a thread about the strongest part of everyone's game, Roosh quipped that his was his " centrally located apartment ." It's common knowledge that logistics is an essential part of getting fast sex with hot girls. "Hey, want to go for a walk?" "Let's get some fresh air" "Wanna go outside for a bit?" "Let's just drop by my place for a quick drink - my apartment is two blocks from here" etc...

A Week of Mining Seattle's Craigslist Apartment Pricing

Image
Everyone is freaking out over San Francisco astronomically high rent prices right now when Seattle real-estate isn’t that far behind. I was walking down the street once in the university district around the University of Washington when I saw construction being built. And then more construction. And then MORE construction down the block. Ridiculous. Looking at a half-torn up flyer, the prices for these new apartments coming out in 2015 were around 1300 per bedroom for a two bedroom apartment ! I quickly went home and started trying to figure out how fast rent was rising in Seattle. One fun way to do this was by working on a project that I have since put off for school back in November. Since reliably the best place to find apartments has been on Craigslist, I created a script using Scrapy to grab listings of apartments on Seattle craigslist and filtered them for the zipcodes within the Seattle boundaries . I manually ran the script for about a week and after filtering out duplicate p...

‘Boom-mates’ find a niche amid Bellingham housing crisis

Image
As housing prices in Western Washington continue through the roof, some Bellingham millennials have saved money by becoming “boom-mates” with empty-nest couples with space to rent. Baby boomers have been taking the blame recently for many of society’s ills, but research by the real estate firm Trulia could put this “worst generation” at the cutting edge of a way to ease the housing crunch in Whatcom County. My current landlord is very responsive to things like maintenance requests. Stephanie Allen, Bellingham “I used to do this for a few years,” said Michael Godwin of Bellingham in response to a social media inquiry . “I rented a mother-in-law suite from an older couple whose kids were old enough to be out of the house.” Godwin said he paid about $550 a month including utilities for a room in the Geneva- Sudden Valley area from 2013-2016. “I feel like it saved me money insofar as it was the cheapest way for me to live by myself,” Godwin said. “Had I opted for an apartment with room...

Crestwood Place , the village's affordable housing development for seniors, seemed perfect. "We were lucky — the waiting list happened to be short during that time," said Paulette Gardner, 71...

The Midnight Train to Moscow

Image
The search began before dawn; the train had just crossed the border of Tajikistan into Uzbekistan. We were only three hours into the four- day train ride between Dushanbe, Tajikistan’s capital, and Moscow. An Uzbek border guard , clad in brown fatigues , boarded the train — a Soviet-replica, green, with a silver roof — and began yelling. He moved through the car, searching passenger after passenger, ripping apart belongings, interrogating everyone about terrorism and narcotics, and scanning flip phones and cheap Nokias for “sex photos” (pornography is banned in Uzbekistan). The passengers endured this, unfazed. Almost all of them were migrants traveling to Russia for work. They’d seen this routine before. It was March. Across Tajikistan, thousands of people — mostly young men — were departing for or preparing to leave for Russia. The long Russian winter was nearing its end; construction projects in cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg were slowly coming back to life. Tajikistan, t...
