The fire that sent flames shooting through the roof of a three-story rowhouse near Dupont Circle started on the first floor, investigators found . An electrical short sparked in the landlord’s living room, and the blaze raced upward in the historic house. Four people were inside. Nina Brekelmans awoke in the burning building and called 911, according to a lawsuit filed by her family. Firefighters arrived minutes later, but by the time they were able to reach her and her housemate Michael McLoughlin , it was too late. Brekelmans, 25, and McLoughlin, 24, were killed by the blaze June 3, 2015 at 1610 Riggs Place NW , where they each rented rooms....

Two people injured in Virginia Beach apartment fire

[embedded content] Virginia Beach , VA. – Two people were taken to the hospital after an early morning apartment fire in Virginia Beach . Firefighters say the fire started just after 3 a.m. at the Linkhorn Bay Apartments in the 500 block of Pine Song Lane .  Firefighters arrived on scene and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the apartment building . A second alarm was immediately called.  One female victim was rushed to the hospital with severe burns over her body and another male victim was transported for a broken leg. It took firefighters almost an hour to put out the fire.  The fire has damaged 12 apartments. Firefighters say 22 people are displaced. Red Cross is on scene this morning to help those affected by the fire. Firefighters say the cause of the fire was due to improperly discarded smoking material a second floor balcony.

A 6-year-old Santa Rosa boy was pulled from the bottom of an apartment complex pool Sunday and saved by bystanders, according to a Rincon Valley fire official . The boy apparently had been dropped off at the Estancia Apartments on Old Redwood Highway in Larkfield for a Sunday afternoon birthday party , Fred Leuenberger, acting battalion chief for Rincon Valley Fire , said Monday. “The kids went to the pool. It sounds like they were unattended and he ended up at the bottom,” Leuenberger said. “Thankfully some bystanders were there.” Someone brought the unresponsive boy out of the pool and he was given CPR. Man jumps from balcony as Tuesday morning fire at Willow Run Apartments displaces 7 people

File photo. An apartment fire Tuesday morning  at the Willow Run Apartments caused a man to jump from a balcony. The two-story fire that looks to be accidental displaced seven people, according to Mobile Fire-Rescue. The fire was reported around 8:53 a.m. at the complex at 2320 Dauphin Island Parkway . When firefighters arrived they saw heavy smoke and fire coming from the two-story apartment, causing a second fire alarm to be issued. According to Mobile Fire- Rescue spokesman Steve Huffman , the fire started in a first floor apartment and spread upward to the second level and through the roof of the structure. A 62-year-old man living in a second floor apartment received non- life threatening injuries when he jumped from a second floor balcony. Fire Sparks Inside Encinitas Studio Apartment

Firefighters battling a fire that sparked inside an Encinitas studio apartment Monday were able to contain the flames, confirmed the Encinitas Fire Department . The fire began around 3:30 p.m. in the garage on Saxony Road, just south of Leucadia Boulevard. The location is near Highway 101 and just east of Interstate 5. When firefighters arrived , they found the studio fully engulfed in flames. They were able to extinguish the fire, and there were no residents inside the house at the time. According to fire officials , it was first reported as a garage fire. Once crews made entry after containing the fire, the garage appeared to have been converted into a studio apartment with a large office area . At this time, there have been no reported injuries. Large tree topples over Costa Mesa apartment complex

COSTA MESA, Calif. (KABC) -- A large tree toppled over a Costa Mesa apartment Monday , causing a roof to collapse and residents to evacuate, said fire authorities . Evacuations at Pinecreek Village Apartments on Adams Avenue were completed after a 65- foot pine tree with a shallow root base landed on the structure around 10:30 a.m., according to Costa Mesa Fire Department officials . Authorities said no one was hurt but a resident who was home in the top unit was fortunate to escape injury. "That tree did come down in the kitchen and a portion of his sofa area there. If he was in that area, it could have been more tragic," said Deputy Chief Fred Seguin of the Costa Mesa Fire Department . The man was sitting in his apartment when a large tree came crashing down onto the building. A kitchen blaze sent Magnolia firefighters to the Fox Creek Apartments off Lacari Street on Monday night. Firefighters were alerted to the fire at 6:45 p.m. and a pumper truck and Tower 1 were dispatched. They arrived to find a small fire in the kitchen of a second-floor apartment. The apartment was in a building on the north side of the Fox Creek site . No injuries were reported.

Apartment building catches fire in Linda Vista - KUSI News

LINDA VISTA (KUSI) — An apartment building was set ablaze Sunday in the 3400 block of Kearny Villa Lane in Linda Vista forcing residents to evacuate before firefighters quickly put the fire out.  The fire department arrived at the scene and acted quickly, putting the fire out in less than half an hour, one of the apartment residents said.  The fire started on the upper floor of the building causing significant damages and leaving little left of the apartment unit. All residents were evacuated safely and there were no injuries reported.  The cause of the fire is still unknown. 

Fire at apartments on Quail Hollow, Carmel

No injuries were reported Tuesday morning when fire damaged a building at the Quail Valley Apartments in south Charlotte. The fire was reported about 6:30 a.m. at the apartment complex behind a shopping center at Quail Hollow and Carmel roads. Charlotte fire Capt . Mark Basnight said crews found heavy smoke coming from a building when they arrived. Basnight said it took a crew of 27 firefighters a little less than 20 minutes to deal with the blaze. He said four apartment units were affected. Two residents told the Observer that the worst of the fire was contained to a single apartment unit . A woman who lived there was able to escape safely, residents said. Her dog also got out OK.

Firefighter injured, residents displaced after fire at Westlake apartment complex (video)

WESTLAKE, Ohio -- A North Ridgeville firefighter suffered minor injuries during an early-Thursday fire that displaced residents of a Westlake apartment complex . Debris fell and hit the firefighter in the head. He was taken to a hospital for treatment but has since been released, according to the North Ridgeville Fire Department . No one else was injured in the fire that broke out just before 4 a.m. at the Barrington Place Apartments on Detroit Road. Twelve residents were taken to the Westlake Recreation Center for shelter. Firefighters from multiple departments arrived at the complex and found the attic engulfed in flames. It took several hours to knock down the fire, which caused significant damage to the building. Body found along Fair Oaks Boulevard had trauma inflicted

The Sacramento County Sheriff ’s Department is investigating whether the fatal stabbing of a 54-year-old woman found in her apartment Tuesday morning is connected to the death of her nephew, who was found hours earlier on Fair Oaks Boulevard just over a mile away. Dispatchers received a 911 call about 8:30 a.m. saying a woman was found dead in her apartment in the 1100 block of Bell Street. A relative of the woman had gone to her apartment after she failed to show up at work earlier in the morning. When deputies arrived, they found a woman who had been stabbed multiple times . She was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sacramento County Coroner identified the woman on Tuesday night as Linda Jeanette Zachmeyer . Zachmeyer was found hours after the department’s homicide detectives found the body of a man on Fair Oaks Boulevard just after 4 a.m. Tuesday.
