ICYMI: Al Capone’s Park Slope Home Is For Sale

Image
PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — If you've ever wanted to live in the old Brooklyn home of a notorious gangster, you've got a chance to do it. The Park Slope home where Al Capone used to live is up for sale, and it will only cost you a cool $2.5 million to move in. Capone grew up in a nearby building on Garfield Place, according to realtor.com, and moved into this listing in the early 1900s. "If he had lived here today, he wouldn’t have to go into the rum-running business," listing agent Bren Salamon told Patch . That's because Capone could make some serious dough from the two rental units attached to the condo, which could bring in a pretty penny in 2017 Park Slope . Anyone who moves in, though, won't be looking at any old relics of Brooklyn gone by. The home, as many are in the borough these days, was completely renovated by an investor about a year ago. The main townhouse is 2, 980 square feet spread over two levels. Along with three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, t...

For $750, Seattle’s newest apartment is the size of a parking space

At $750 a month, a new apartment opening in the University District is one of the cheapest in Seattle. So what do you get for that price? A room the size of a parking space with a toilet that’s not even behind its own door. The landlord for a congregate housing building opening on Seventh Avenue Northeast recently posted an ad online searching for tenants, and it was widely circulated this week in a Reddit post that referred to the room as a “prison cell.” The ad features a 130-square-foot “studio” that contains a sink, shower and toilet. The entire space is in one room: The toilet and shower are open to the rest of the living space. There is no kitchen. The rent is $750 a month, plus a $1,000 deposit, and includes access to a congregate kitchen area and free utilities. “This is a definite MUST SEE!!” the ad says. Check pillow: Target, similar. Silver lamp: vintage, similar. Coffee table: thrifted, similar. Rug: Crate & Barrel. Artwork: Etsy. On budget shopping: When we moved in, we developed a budget for each room (so if we wanted a particular couch, it meant we could only spend this much on all the other things). We would be like, ‘Okay, by March we’ll probably have saved enough money to finish this room, by July we can finish this room…’ For the bigger pieces, I would first go to five vintage stores around the Mission — ...
