Qualifying Ends With 1 Contested Race In Alpharetta

ALPHARETTA, GA -- Alpharetta voters will have only one contested race on the ballot when they head to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 7 to make their decisions in the city's general election. The qualifying period for the municipal elections ended late Wednesday afternoon , and only one seat on the City Council will result in a race. Incumbent Mike Kennedy did not qualify to seek re-election, so contenders Ben Burnett and Ben Easterling will duke it out for the Post 2 seat. Incumbents Don Mitchell of Post 1 and Chris Owens of Post 3 will not face challengers this year. Burnett, a member of the city's Planning Commission, said he's running to give Alpharetta homeowners a "stronger voice in the future of their community." He and his family moved to the city six years ago because of Alpharetta's unique quality of live. As a native of Gwinnett County, Burnett said he has first-hand experience with what "poor planning and uncontrolled growth " can do to a ...

While we're talking about equality, there's a group among us which deserves a boisterous voice | NFK Dreams with Jesse Scaccia

This week I met another 38-year-old Jesse who calls Norfolk home . In my time with him I found that Jesse Monroe’s defining characteristic is gratitude. He offered the most sincere and present thanks every time someone helped him, which ends up being a lot in his situation. Jesse has arthrogryposis, a condition that does not allow him to use his arms or legs, though he should not be defined by that. “I love history and politics,” said Jesse, who has lived in Hampton Roads his whole life. “As a kid I used to love the Civil War.” Too often in our society we judge people by what we see as being “wrong” with them. While Jesse was not graced with the ideal limbs, there is nothing wrong with the parts of him that are most important: his spirit and his heart. He is whole, and thanks to Hope House, he is independent. “It’s Jesse’s life,” said Dottie Cuccaro, a team leader for Hope House, which serves 122 people in Hampton Roads, 93 of them in Norfolk. “He should be able to live it how he wants...

Fines surge in crackdown on Airbnb owners in Paris

(MENAFN - AFP) Fines imposed against owners renting their Paris apartments out on Airbnb surged more than tenfold in the first half of 2017 thanks to more rigorous monitoring, city authorities said Friday. Thirty-one owners of 128 units were slapped with a total of 615,000 euros (723,000) in fines for renting them out for more than the city limit of 120 days per year, city hall official Ian Brossat told AFP . "These numbers do not reflect an explosion in the number of rental offers but in the effectiveness of the monitoring" by a team of 25 agents deployed by the city, Brossat said. "We are pleased to see that the courts have a heavier hand than before," he added. The maximum fine for the offence doubled in November to 50,000 euros. Paris is one of Airbnb's top markets, with some 65,000 sites listed. Another 35,000 are available from similar online platforms . The city has slapped limits on the short-term rental of apartments and rooms as they compete with hot...

For the solution to B.C.’s vacant-housing situation, look to Paris Add to ...

There was a story making the rounds on social media this week about how dire the affordable-housing situation is in San Francisco, including the lack of rental stock. The reporter found a woman who commutes 260 kilometres, round trip, daily to her job in the Bay area. She wakes up shortly after two in the morning each day, and leaves for work around four.  An extreme example, certainly. But San Francisco has become the poster child for the great affordable -housing crisis that is gripping big-name cities across the United States and around the world. And as with many of these cities, one problem San Francisco is plagued with is empty homes. What’s shocking is how late to the party Frisco has been to do anything about it. Currently, the city assesses an annual fee of $711 (U.S.) for any home deemed to be vacant. Quite a deterrent. Only now is San Francisco starting to look at what other jurisdictions are doing to deal with this issue, including Vancouver. They will almost certainly be...

When Business And Football Match Up And The Fans Win

Image
Not everyone in football is complaining about the pernicious influence of big business on the beautiful game. Fans of Chelsea, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig are among those who have good reason to look more kindly on the marriage of finance and football. BEN STANSALL via Getty Images Roman Abramovich’s business career had humble beginnings, selling imported rubber ducks from his Moscow apartment before taking advantage of Russia’s emerging energy market to propel himself to enormous wealth. By the time he took over Chelsea FC in 2003, they were a top six side, but nothing like the global brand they would become under his stewardship. Only 15 years earlier they had been in the Second Division and their one and only league title had been 50 years earlier. Since Abramovich took over the club they have won five Premier League titles , four FA Cups, three League Cups and two European trophies including the Champions League in 2012. It’s little wonder Chelsea fans h...

‘My Kids Are by Themselves’

An East Hampton woman is facing felony charges of aggravated drunken driving , as well two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, following her arrest last week. According to the East Hampton Village police , Amber Elizabeth Gregg , 27, left her two children, a 4-year-old and a 7-month-old baby, alone in her apartment while she was out drinking on the morning of Aug. 16. She was almost home at 4 a.m. when she was arrested, at the wheel of a 2001 Hyundai, in the parking lot off Newtown Lane, just before the North Main Street intersection . She had turned into the lot, police said, without signaling, and at a high speed. “I had two Jack and Cokes at the Talkhouse,” she told the arresting officer. Ms. Gregg, who was convicted of misdemeanor drunken driving in 2012, making the new charge a felony, was taken to Cedar Street headquarters , where her breath test produced a reported reading of almost .21. The high reading raised the charge to the aggravated level. “I want to see m...

J.E.B. Stuart Monument in Richmond vandalized

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Police are investigating after a person was shot at the Linkhorn Bay Apartments on Treetop Drive. According to police, the call came in at 2:28 p.m. for a gunshot victim. The investigation revealed that the suspect and victim were involved in a physical altercation in the parking lot of the apartment complex. The altercation moved into a residence when the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the victim. The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Residents living in the complex say they originally thought the sirens they heard were responding to an accident on the highway. “We started walking the dogs, that’s when we saw the undercover police officers cars , the tape, and all the officers,” said Tiffany McGregor. McGregor has lived at the complex for five years and says it’s usually a quiet area with friendly neighbors. “It’s a community. We look out for each other. For this to happen is extremely surprising,” she said. McGregor says the incident show...

Aging Parents With Lots of Stuff, and Children Who Don’t Want It

“We went from a 3,000-square-foot colonial with three floors to a single-story, 1,400-square- foot living space ,” said Tena Bluhm, 76, formerly of Fairfax, Va. She and her 77-year-old husband, Ray Bluhm, moved this month to a retirement community in Lake Ridge, Va. Before the move, their two adult children took a handful of items, including a new bed and a dining table and chairs. But Mrs. Bluhm could not interest them in “the china and the silver and the crystal,” her own generation’s hallmarks of a properly furnished, middle-class home. The competitive accumulation of material goods , a cornerstone of the American dream, dates to the post- World War II economy , when returning veterans fled the cities to establish homes and status in the suburbs. Couples married when they were young, and wedding gifts were meant to be used — and treasured — for life. “Americans spent to keep up with the Joneses, using their possessions to make the statement that they were not failing in their caree...
