This Is The Perfect Workout Routine For When Mercury Is In Retrograde

If you've been feeling like something is off, weird, or downright out of whack recently, good ol' mercury in retrograde may be to blame. For those of you who aren't astrology buffs, here's the deal with MIR: Three to four times a year, Mercury appears to switch directions (hence, retrograde). Although this is technically an optical illusion, astrologers believe the phenomenon can cause a whole slew of wackiness, from transportation to communication issues. “This phenomenon is one of the few that affects everyone in a fairly uniform way, and its effects are always obvious,” says Susan Miller, founder of AstrologyZone.com. "When Mercury retrogrades, think of it as an instant signal that the wind is changing direction.” And while not everyone is keen to pointing fingers at planetary disturbances for day-to-day problems, if you're an astrology fan, you may be treading especially cautiously during this time. Miller notes “Mercury rules anything that begins with ‘re’...

How the Other Half Lives

Image
The Fountainhead , part 1, chapter 12 T he Wynand newspaper chain, trying to boost its sales and publicity, decides to run an exposé of living conditions in New York’s slums. The editor-in- chief Alvah Scarret assigns Dominique Francon , who’s his favorite columnist, to do an investigation. Although Dominique is used to living in the lap of luxury, she agrees to spend two weeks living in a run-down tenement on the East Side, washing up in a tin bath, peeling potatoes in a shared kitchen, mingling with the poor people who live there and getting to know them. At the end of two weeks she returned to her penthouse apartment on the roof of a hotel over Central Park, and her articles on life in the slums appeared in the Banner. They were a merciless, brilliant account. She heard baffled questions at a dinner party. “My dear, you didn’t actually write those things?” “Dominique, you didn’t really live in that place?” “Oh, yes,” she answered. “The house you own on East Twelfth Street , Mrs. P...

(Source: WOIO) WESTLAKE, OH (WOIO) - Residents of a Westlake apartment complex cannot return to their homes Thursday, and likely won't be able to return for at least several days, after a strong smell of gas was reported to the fire department .  Cleveland 19 was told by residents of Barrington Place Apartments  that Columbia Gas is on scene and is performing a test that takes 48 hours to complete to determine what type of gas it is. Residents said that the company that owns the property is paying for hotel rooms for those residents who were displaced due to the apparent gas issue .   The Ohio Department of Natural Resources said they sent an inspector out to assist with the investigation, who determined that it is not t...

Stuyvesant Town goes green: How the 70-year-old complex is reinventing itself in a modern age

Image
Photos courtesy of Stuyvesant Town “Think of us as a 1947 Cadillac retrofitted with a Tesla engine,” says Marynia Kruk, Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village ‘s Community Affairs Manager . Though the 80- acre residential complex ’s 110 red brick, cruciform-shaped buildings were constructed 70 years ago this month, their imposing facades are hiding an intense network of systems that, since 2011, have allowed the development to reduce its on- site carbon emissions by 6.8 percent, equal to over 17 million pounds of coal saved. To put this in perspective, that’s roughly the same savings as 3,000 drivers deciding to bike or take the train for an entire year or planting a forest of 400,000 trees. This massive sustainability push , along with new ownership (Blackstone Group and Canadian investment firm Ivanhoe Cambridge bought the complex for $5.3 billion in October 2015), updated amenities, and an affordable housing commitment , is driving Manhattan’s  largest apartment complex  into t...

The vehicle ended up “a good five feet into the apartment” at 2110 Newport Blvd., according to Costa Mesa Fire Department Capt . Chris Coates. Two cats and three kittens were taken from this Virginia Beach apartment after they were abandoned without food or water. (Adrienne Mayfield/Southside Daily) VIRGINIA BEACH — Two cats and three kittens were removed from a Virginia Beach apartment after they were abandoned there without food or water. The cats were discovered by an exterminator on June 22 in an empty unit at Patriot Pointe Apartments , located in the 100 block of Coral Gables Court . Virginia Beach Animal Control sealed the apartment and left a 24-hour notice for the cats’ owners. After a day passed, officials came back to the apartment and noticed that all of the seals were intact, meaning no one had entered the apartment. Documents show that the cats were in the apartment without food, water or air conditioning for more than 40 hours. Of...
