Cedar Grove to Step Up Enforcement of "No Swimming" at Devil's Hole - News

Image
Devil's Hole CEDAR GROVE, NJ - Cedar Grove police will soon have more authority to enforce the no swimming rule at Devil's Hole in the township.  Devil's Hole is a ravine in the Peckman River, located behind Foodtown and the apartments on Little Falls Road near Community Park.  It has long been a picturesque place to visit, but has also been a gathering place for young people. "Thoughout the years young people have visited the location," said Township Manager Tom Tucci at the town council meeting Monday . "It seems lately, with the advent of social media, it has become an attractive nuisance with large groups of young and sometimes older people going there." Tucci noted that the area is not safe for swimming for a number of reasons.  The ravine is deep and a young man drowned there in 2014.  The water quality also makes the water unsafe for swimming.  Tucci pointed out that the flow of the Peckman River contains discharge from both the Verona and Ced...

A Journey on the Trail of Martin Luther

Image
In the footsteps of  500 Years of Reformation October 31 st , 2017 will mark the 500 th Anniversary of the world changing event when religious reformer Martin Luther nailed his arguments against the practices of the Catholic Church , his “95 Theses” to a church door in Wittenberg, Germany beginning the Protestant Reformation. I recently took a trip to follow in the footsteps of the monk turned protestant icon , and wondered how to frame it. It’s a complex story, but how to begin? And like a sentence in German where you don’t know the meaning until you get to the verb at the end, I didn’t know how to shape it until the last day of my journey when two stark threads came to together. Wartburg Castle For the traveler, following the trail of the famous reformer can be a fascinating way to explore a beautiful country, but also a journey through history and culture. Luther spent much of his life in what is for the most part in the former East Germany, which provides its own paradoxes. And...

Reports: Florida WR James Robinson, suspended LB cited for weed

Even with the start of a new season fast approaching , Florida’s offseason of off- field discontent continues . Firstcoastnews.com was the first to report Thursday that linebacker Ventrell Miller and James Robinson were both cited for marijuana possession on Monday.  Police were called to an on-campus apartment by a residential assistant who smelled the “strong odor of burning cannabis” coming from one of the rooms.  From the website’s report: Once inside the room, officers found a cloud of smoke and a styrofoam cup that police say appeared to be used as an ash tray. Robinson and Miller were in the room. Officers asked Robinson where the cannabis was and he said it was in his top drawer. There were two small bags of marijuana and Robinson and Miller admitted to each owning one of the bags, the report says. Bettendorf apartment project seen as downtown 'domino' | Local

BETTENDORF -- A new downtown residential project got its official start Wednesday with the swing of hammers and the clink of quarters -- a lot of quarters.  The Bridges, planned at 221 15th St., will offer 132 market-rate apartments from about 400 square feet to about 1200 square feet, said developer Frank Levy , president of Newbury Living. The five-story building will be U-shaped; most of its tenants will have a view of the Mississippi River. "I think this building will be a signature building for your downtown," Mr. Levy said. "I hope you like it." The Bridges is being built near the new Interstate 74 bridge on the site of the former  Twin Bridges Motor Inn . On Wednesday, Mr. Levy was joined by Bettendorf Mayor Bob Gallagher and other stakeholders celebrating the site's transition by hitting the motor inn with gold- painted sledge hammers .  Mayor Gallagher said The Bridges is the first of a number of residential projects Bettendorf wants downtown...

Thieves hit 18 vehicles at East Atlanta apartment complex

ATLANTA (CBS46) - Atlanta police are investigating a rash of vehicle break-ins at an East Atlanta apartment complex . Police said thieves smashed in the windows on at least 18 vehicles overnight Monday at Enso Apartments on Glenwood Avenue in Glenwood Park. Reports indicate in all, there have been 65 vehicles broken into in the past year and a half. Police said that is an unusually high number at one location. "It is a concern," said Sgt. Greg Lyon. However, police do report break-ins in the neighborhood are down seven percent last year from 2013, though they said they would like to get the figures even lower. "It's hard for me to tell a resident crime is down if a resident is a victim of a crime, or his neighbor is a victim of a crime," said Lyon. "It's all perspective." Lyon said police have increased patrols in the area and are on alert for anything suspicious. "This is the second time my vehicle has been broken into, and it's horri...

A Nostalgic Tale of Roll-on Body Glitter, Graphic Tees and an On-Again-Off-Again Itch for Bangs

In sixth grade I looked up from my book one day and realized that every other girl in my class had grown out her bangs. It was as if it had happened overnight — last I'd checked, there was absolutely nothing about me that would set me apart from the crowd, either in a good or bad way. But now, the more closely I looked at all the 11-year-olds around me, the greater the discrepancy appeared to be. Me: thick bangs, chunky glasses, plain denim shorts and a Looney Toons sweatshirt . Everyone else: bright, plastic jewelry, hair spiking up from jaw clips, and fitted, sparkling tees. Middle school for me was all about wanting to look right . The popular girls in my grade looked like the girls I saw on TV — spunky and pre-teen and carefree — but no matter how much I mimicked their style, something always seemed off when I looked in the mirror. Certainly I tried, spending all my babysitting money on chokers and glittery butterfly clips from Claire's, platform sneakers and slip-ons ...

New York Today: Hiring Movers

Image
Photo How best to do the heavy lifting? Credit Justin Sullivan/Getty Images Good morning on this shining Wednesday. Apartment hunting in the city, especially during one of the busiest moving months , is no fun. And then there’s physically packing and hauling your stuff. Oh, and paying for movers, if you go that route. We reached out to a few moving companies for some free advice on the best and worst times to relocate, and how to be smart about your move. When’s the most expensive time to move? Now. “Moving in the summer season is more expensive than moving in the off-season by roughly 20 or 30 percent,” said Jon Katz, chief executive of Katz Moving in Long Island City , Queens. You can expect lower rates between October and January, he said. Do prices surge on specific days or weeks of a month? The stretch between the 26th and the 3rd of any given month is considered peak moving time , when availability is lowest and rates are highest across the industry, according to Mr. Katz. Fo...

Chesterfield mobile home residents might have to move as apartment developers eye suburb | Business

Image
The only mobile home park in Chesterfield seems out of place. Since it was built 50 years ago , glass-and- steel corporate headquarters and upscale subdivisions have slowly surrounded it. In a suburb that means big homes , new shopping centers and shiny office campuses to most St. Louisans, it’s a wonder there still is a place to park a trailer. But developers have turned their sights to the Chesterfield Mobile Home Park , where roughly 140 mobile homes offer some of the most affordable housing along the Highway 40 (Interstate 64) corridor. If the developers can rezone the land, residents could be forced to try and move their mobile homes. “This has been sitting here since 1987,” said resident Charlie Oakes , gesturing to the mobile home he lives in with his wife, Lisa Oakes. “We don’t know if it’s moveable or not.” Despite the political pitfalls of buying land out from under mobile home owners , some of whom may struggle to move their trailers, the developers’ int...

We decided to spend a day there to see what it's like. Crosstown Concourse is not to be just another a mixed-use commercial building, and not just because it's so big at 1. 1 million square feet or such a physical improvement over the vacant, blighted hulk that the  Sears distribution center had been. More: Crosstown Concourse boosts Memphis 's office sector "Better together'' is the redevelopment's catch phrase. Crosstown Concourse aspires to create a kind of mojo among tenants and visitors.  The idea is to use art, performances, programming, and even the design of the building's public spaces to have tenants and visitors engaging each other, to be in relationship.  More: ...
