Come moving day, would you rather have the movers pack, or unpack, your stuff?

The moving process is stressful from beginning to end. But we asked five New Yorkers to pinpoint their preferred luxury: Having movers help you pack or unpack?  Here's what they had to say: Soak up the memories When you pack up a place yourself you get to say goodbye to it. Open up a bottle of wine with a friend, roommate or significant other, get drunk and fall asleep on the boxes. Then make sure you have your new apartment unpacked for you.— Matt, Downtown Brooklyn (pictured below) Packing up is way easier I’d rather have a mover help me unpack—and if they could add in a professional organizer who could say no!— Lauren, Upper West Side I’ve never met a box I didn’t like I’d much rather have the help unpacking since it always takes me at least a week to unpack after a vacation, let alone moving my whole life. Torture.— Tori, Crown Heights, Brooklyn Let the experts pack up I’m always going to be the first one to ask for packing help. Unpacking is a different story, however, as I ...

Charlotte Housing Trust Fund could run dry soon

Charlotte’s biggest source of funding for affordable housing projects could soon run dry, as a City Council committee voted Wednesday to move forward with its biggest-ever round of new projects. It’s the latest step in the city’s push to create or preserve 5, 000 affordable housing units over three years, a goal City Council voted to adopt in the wake of the Keith Scott shooting and subsequent unrest last year. City staff said Wednesday that the city is almost halfway to that goal, though the total includes rehabilitated residences and down payment assistance for homebuyers, in addition to brand-new affordable units . The allocations from Charlotte’s Housing Trust Fund that the committee voted to move forward with Wednesday will provide financing for 769 new, income-restricted apartments in five buildings, though the projects also need approval for federal low- income housing tax credits . The aggressive approach to spending could build more apartments faster, but it will leave...

Galen Wasem booking photo (Photo: Williamson County Jail ) Police have identified and charged the man who they say barricaded himself in a Cedar Park apartment Thursday evening and led to a SWAT call. Cedar Park police said they were called to the Muir Lake Apartments around 7:30 p.m. Thursday for a welfare check on Galen Wasem. Boy, 3, stable after being pulled from pool

Image
A 3-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital Monday after he was found at the bottom of a pool in an Oakland Park apartment complex . The toddler had been playing with his teenage brother and sister near the basketball courts inside La Estancia Apartments , but ran off, said Linda Bowers, property manager at the complex located in the 4100 block of Northwest 21st Avenue . "Apparently they saw him run away, and they thought he went home to the mom and when the mom came down looking for the little boy that's when the brother and sister realized he wasn't with the mom," Bowers said. Maintenance worker Greg Johnson , 26, was walking toward the pool when he heard the boy's mother scream. "As soon as she opened the gate, she started screaming, so I actually ran over and was able to help her grab the kid out [of the pool] and immediately performed CPR on the boy," Johnson said. "As she handed me the boy I knew he was in bad shape." It was unknown ho...

D.C. Circuit forbids seizing all electronic storage devices in computer warrant cases

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit handed down an important computer search case Friday , United States v. Griffith . The case is about computer search warrants , and specifically whether they can authorize a seizure of all devices that investigators discover that might contain the evidence sought. The frustrating part of the opinion is that there are a few different ways to interpret it, and I’m not sure which way is right. I thought I would explain why the case is important, why I’m not sure how to interpret it, and how it is in tension with other decisions. I. The Facts The facts of the case are simple. The police obtained a search warrant to search the home of a gang member suspected of involvement in a homicide. The warrant permitted the government to seize electronic storage devices in the home. The thinking was that gang members share a lot of information about their crimes, and that information was likely to be on their electronic devices such as their cellpho...
