Man Spends 30 Years Turning His Apartment Into A Palace

Image
Adrian Reeman is a DIY guru! He has spent the last 30 years turning his Southhampton council flat into a replica of the Palace of Versailles. Over time he has transformed the walls, ceiling, fireplace, and cupboards in every room. His ninth floor apartment now has a palatial feel with an interior fit for a king. Despite devoting hundreds of hours to working his magic on wardrobes, chairs, chests, and tables, Adrian has spent very little money, because he finds or makes everything himself! Some of the tables, for example, are made from discarded wooden salad bowls , while the detailing on the fireplace was created using the brass prongs from plugs. Adrian is currently creating a toilet with a faux marble finish to serve as the perfect throne. What’s even more incredible is that Adrian has no professional design experience , nor has he ever visited Versailles! To say he figured this out on his own is the understatement of the year. Sadly, I am not a DIY person. I love the idea of mak...

All functions would move to Grainger's main headquarters in Lake Forest or another facility in Janesville, Wisc. The move comes about a year after Grainger expanded its Northbrook parking lot to bring more inside sales staff on board, he said. Micucci said that no staff reductions would be made among the Northbrook staff, "and if any are made, they'll be in Niles." He said that the changes were designed mainly to bring more people "unde...

‘Boom-mates’ find a niche amid Bellingham housing crisis

Image
As housing prices in Western Washington continue through the roof, some Bellingham millennials have saved money by becoming “boom-mates” with empty-nest couples with space to rent. Baby boomers have been taking the blame recently for many of society’s ills, but research by the real estate firm Trulia could put this “worst generation” at the cutting edge of a way to ease the housing crunch in Whatcom County. My current landlord is very responsive to things like maintenance requests. Stephanie Allen, Bellingham “I used to do this for a few years,” said Michael Godwin of Bellingham in response to a social media inquiry . “I rented a mother-in-law suite from an older couple whose kids were old enough to be out of the house.” Godwin said he paid about $550 a month including utilities for a room in the Geneva- Sudden Valley area from 2013-2016. “I feel like it saved me money insofar as it was the cheapest way for me to live by myself,” Godwin said. “Had I opted for an apartment with room...

By Nichole Manna Staff writer A Fayetteville apartment complex that was almost closed by the city can now be used as an example for other establishments facing city -forced closures, officials say. A year ago, residents at Barrington Place Apartments , known then as Cambridge Arms Apartments , were used to the sounds of screaming voices during neighborhood fights, followed by gunshots. "Two or three times a night you'd hear gunshots," longtime resident George Edmonds said. "There were meth labs, stabbings, people were getting robbed, you'd have people trying to get in your apartment." From June 2013 to May 2014, Fayetteville police say they were called to the complex 142 times. The majority of calls were for domestic assaults and residential break-ins. Two people were killed during that timeframe. From June 2014 to May 2015, police were called to the complex 77 times, a decrease of 46 percent. The Taylor Eclipse – Nathan Hubbard – Medium

When one of our closest celestial bodies hijacked our collective conversation this week, we stopped everything to watch, if only to distract ourselves from the turmoil of our present terrestrial existence . The light shifted and reframed our perspective, reminding us that something greater lives above. That’s right: Taylor Swift began her comeback. The greatest Chief Marketing Officer in a generation launched it with a dark social media post that, much like Monday’s solar eclipse, could have caused blindness if you stared at it for too long. (Is that snake or a rodent tail? An FX ad for The Strain ? Oh god, did somebody shave Meredith and Olivia?) She deleted every post from her Twitter and Instagram accounts — even her profile pictures! — a Friday news event that was surpassed only by Steve Bannon’s White House departure . And yet, the accounts themselves remained active, a not-quite-full blackout that served as a harbinger of things to come. The Taylor Eclipse was coming. In re...

Tinley Park denies racism in handling of low-income apartment plans

Tinley Park is denying allegations in a Justice Department lawsuit that it violated federal fair housing laws in its review of the since- abandoned apartment development The Reserve. The government brought the complaint last November regarding the village's handling of the apartment building , which had been planned for the northeast corner of 183rd Street and Oak Park Avenue . Earlier this year, the village settled a separate federal lawsuit filed by the developer of the project, Buckeye Community Hope Foundation . The village, in its response to the Justice Department lawsuit , denies that it "engaged in a pattern or practice of unlawful discrimination." While the village's planning department had determined the project was in "precise compliance" with the village's Legacy Code, the village in its response to the Justice Department lawsuit contends that the department's final report, before the project was considered by the Plan Commission, ...

One young DC resident is hoping to make the experience of finding a place a bit more enjoyable. Earlier this month, 24-year-old DC resident Jamie Grigg launched Exposed Brick DC , a website that aims to “break through the clutter of the DC rental market .” In short, Grigg acts as a rental curator for those on the hunt.
