shabby, tired and not enough care - Review of Avanti Holiday Village, Paphos

unlike the avanti hotel, which has had millions spent on its renovation, the village is tired and unloved. Bathrooms are cruddy, dingy and shabby. Rooms are a good size but outdated, tired looking and feel unwelcoming. The pool area is beautiful but too many broken beds (actually, too many beds all together) and often covered in the detritis of the previous day's residents. The pool itself is so crowded you cant actually swim. Restaurant serves excellent food (breakfast and lunch) but is so woefully under staffed that service is fraught and staff look dejected and miserable. public facilities like loos are shabby and not cleaned regularly and the gym is a disgrace. The feeling is that the owners are cheap skates - they charge you to look your valuables away in teh room safe, they dont put a single hook on the door in the bathroom for towels, there are no hand towels or tissues in the rooms, not enough staff to make your visit welcoming and relaxed and general over crowding. spend...

Renters hoped city would put on ballot ordinance to hold landlords accountable for housing conditions | FOX 4 Kansas City WDAF-TV

The group wanted as many people as possible to turn out to urge the KCMO City Council to put an ordinance on the ballot that would hold landlords accountable for unsafe apartments. “Too many low-income renters in Kansas City are living with mold, leaks, fire hazards, crumbling infrastructure, mice, and more. As the owners of these establishments, the responsibility of offering and maintaining healthy places for families to live falls on the landlords,” said CCO on its Facebook page. Council members voted 4 -to-1 to not place the proposed law on the November ballot. The new law would have required...

What are cheap and safe areas to buy an apartment in in Maryland or DC?

North West Redline : Dupont to Friendship Heights.  (Washington DC) Orange Line West : Courthouse to East Falls Church (Virginia) Yellow/Blue Going South: Pentagon City/Crystal City You can find a place with people for probably $600/650+ You can probably find a place by yourself for $1000 to $1250 * I don't know Maryland well enough to comment. Public transportation in the city is quite popular. BTW, without knowing where you are working, my guess is that you are going to want something pretty Metro Accessible .  Perhaps within a 15 to 20 minute walk of the Metro.  Or within 15 to 20 minute walk of a major busline that takes you within a couple blocks of your place of work. Update: Virginia may be the best place to buy price-wise.  (that is to say Orange or Gray going west) There is some more expensive stuff in the Northwest thats pretty safe and that might be reasonable. I've included the metro map: Metro - Rail - Maps - Rail/Google Map

Chilacates Will Bring Taco Joy to Mission Hill

Image
It will be the third location for the growing Mexican restaurant group, and its first outside of Jamaica Plain. Chicken and fish tacos at Chilacates. / Photo by Jenna Pelletier Popular taco shop Chilacates is spreading the love: The Jamaica Plain-born taqueria will open a third location in Mission Hill. Eater Boston got a tip about signage going up at the under- construction Tremont apartment complex (1480 Tremont St.), and Chilcates owner Socrates Abreu confirmed he’s currently working with architects and planners to design the forthcoming restaurant. While his original location near Stony Brook was joined by a second outpost on the well- traveled Centre Street this past winter, the Mission Hill location will be Chilacates’ first location built from the floor up. That will take about four to six months, Abreu estimates . He has been looking for more locations for a year, he told Eater, and found the Tremont spot to have “the same vibe” as the original Armory Street Chilacates . T...

Taylor Swift just announced a new album and single in typically savvy fashion

We finally know what Taylor Swift has been plotting: her new Reputation. Swift’s absence from the public eye has been conspicuous over the past few months. She apparently skipped hosting her annual Fourth of July party, which she usually celebrates by posting a blast of carefully posed photographs all over Instagram. Her presence in paparazzi rags has dropped to near invisibility. She’s been so invisible that it seemed plausible to multiple people that her staff was sneaking her in and out of her apartment in a giant box. But this week, Swift started making moves . She wiped all of her social media profiles clean — no profile pictures, even. She deleted her old posts. On Monday, she posted a grainy video of a snake on every account she owned. Rumors flew that she was planning to make an announcement at 2 pm Eastern, just as the solar eclipse was reaching its peak in New York, in what would have been the ultimate power move . According to several radio DJs, some Taylor news will be r...

NYC Rents Rising Twice As Fast As Wages, Except for Wealthiest, Study Finds - East Harlem - New York

View Full Caption Corcoran Group MANHATTAN— Yes, New York City is way less affordable now than seven years ago. Case in point: An apartment going for $2,000 a month for rent in 2010 would now get $2,657 a month, a report published Wednesday from real estate search engine StreetEasy reveals. Compounding the city’s affordability crisis: rents in the city rose twice as fast as wages, according to the analysis, which compared the StreetEasy Rent Index with wage data from the city’s Department of Labor. While median rents increased 3 .9 percent a year since 2010, wages increased by 1.8 percent over the same period. Those working in the city’s lowest wage jobs were hit hardest. Low- wage earners — those in the bottom 20 percent of the workforce, which represent a little more than 800,000 of the roughly 4.1 million employed New Yorkers ...

Bad moon rising: Blotto man exposed, slapped butt to cops, officers say

Image
Shine on, dude. Cops responding to a call about a shirtless guy trying to get into a Fort Pierce apartment found Austin Lee Young , who they say reeked of booze, according to his arrest affidavit, reports Will Greenlee in his Off the Beat blog for TCPalm.com in Stuart.   After Young allegedly told officers a man who lived in the apartment was rude to his wife, cops told him to stay away. When young walked over to his place, he flashed his full moon to the cops while slapping it, saying, "kiss my (expletive) pigs," according to his arrest affidavit. No word on whether he had a heavenly body. Officers then showed him the dark side of the moon. Get the DUHtails and arrest affidavit at Will Greenlee's Off the Beat blog at TCPalm.com in Stuart. Small kitchens rely on innovative storage

A small kitchen needs to perform just like a tiny galley on a boat. Every square inch must be designed for maximum function, easy utility and durability. Hinges, drawer pulls, cabinet knobs and specialty hardware with flipper doors (to eliminate clumsy swinging cabinet doors ) are either made of wood or solid brass. Every moving part must operate fluidly and be in good working order so that everything can be stowed away at a moment's notice, like with a change in the weather. When nautical designers plan a kitchen, they know work centers must serve a dual purpose and must be secured and covered when not in use so nothing falls or spills over. Surfaces can hold cushions or bedding that are tied down for passage. Finishes are selected that are durable enough to fight back against corrosive salty air and water. On land, small kitchens are constantly used and demand the most durable materials. Fortunately, when we consider finish choices, the lesser a...

Dan Haar: An Old Friend Of The New UConn Campus Returns

Image
After the speeches, after the ribbon-cutting, after the cheering at the UConn Hartford branch on Wednesday, Roger Gelfenbien stood on the platform overlooking the main atrium and blurted out an odd recollection. “I had a great career coming out of this thing,” Gelfenbein said. “This is where I went to school.” Huh? Classes start at the new campus Monday and Gelfenbein, 74, is long retired from the roles that made him one of Hartford's highest- profile civic leaders and business executives. Gelfenbien has three connections to the UConn Hartford campus . In all three, he can rightly claim he went to school there. And even though he didn’t have a public role in the festivities, it’s possible the $140 million project would never have happened without him. As a youngster growing up on Wethersfield Avenue, he worked at the old Hartford Times as a paperboy — and recalled stuffing newspaper inserts into the main paper as they came off the conveyor belt from the presses in the basement...

Grand Castle nears completion | 2017-08-25

Since the project broke ground on July 29, 2016, Roger Lucas’ vision of building a “castle” has taken on an almost mythic quality. The nearly completed Grand Castle apartment complex looks as if it were taken straight from the pages of an Arthurian legend and dropped into Grandville. As the owner of Land and Company Apartments, Lucas has built apartment complexes across West Michigan for more than 30 years. Building one that resembles a castle presented an interesting challenge. His vision came from several trips to Europe, across Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands and Belgium. He loved the castles that he saw there and thought the design would be perfect for an apartment building . “There’s some mystique that goes with castles. It’s not like anything else,” Lucas said. “So, the question was can we build an apartment complex to look like a castle?” Lucas’ castle, which is based on the style of Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, is a 510- unit apartment complex surroundin...

Plan Commission approves Roosevelt Library/CHA combo

Image
The Chicago Plan Commission on Thursday approved a controversial plan to build a new Roosevelt Library at the base of a Chicago Housing Authority building on Taylor Street. Roughly 560 Little Italy residents signed petitions urging the Plan Commission to put off a vote on the project, one of three in Chicago combining libraries with CHA housing, to give them more time to negotiate the size and scope of the project at 1350 W. Taylor. “The community has not had an opportunity to provide input to the proposed location, the scale of the building, the number of rental units and types of units, parking and other intended uses. We need to know the overall plan for little Italy and the CHA land,” said Mary Beth Howard , a Little Italy resident . Psychologist Michael Atella said his grandparents came to Chicago in 1913 and settled on the northeast corner of Taylor and Halsted. “We’re used to diversity. . . . We’re not here objecting to this plan as racists or anything like that or to b...
